Patriots Draft Needs: Should Pats Pick Receiver After Brandin Cooks Trade?

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Los Angeles won't pick until the third round with the 87th overall selection.

In his first and only season with New England, Cooks totaled 65 receptions, 1,082 receiving yards, and seven receiving touchdowns.

On Tuesday afternoon, Snead acquired a new No. 1 wide receiver at a heavy price.

The New England Patriots didn't want to trade Brandin Cooks.

Cooks is scheduled to earn about $8.5 million this season in the final year of his rookie contract. Finding a team willing to give up two high picks for Beckham is one thing, but any interested team will also need to be ready to make Beckham the highest-paid receiver in history.

They don't have a pick in the first two rounds of this year's draft, they don't have any real wiggle room underneath the salary cap, and they don't have much certainty at three of their four linebacker spots.

The Patriots now have the 23rd and 31st picks in the first round of the draft later this month, and a void to fill at wide receiver now that they've dealt Cooks. And despite various reports to the contract, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Giants and Rams never once entered "serious negotiations" about a Beckham trade. So the Rams will have to decide how to handle both Cooks and Suh becoming free agents next year, while likely wanting to negotiate an extension with Aaron Donald. Yet the Rams don't appear to regret the trade, even though Watkins was their fourth-leading receiver with 39 catches, because he excelled in the red zone with eight TD grabs and provided a deep threat that had to be respected by opponents.

Brandin Cooks #14 of the New England Patriots looks on before the AFC Championship Game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Gillette Stadium on January 21, 2018 in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

The move also means that the Patriots will not be trading star tight end Rob Gronkowski, despite some recent speculation, according to Adam Schefter.

Retaining Cooks was likely going to cost the Patriots at least $13 million annually or they would have been forced to apply the franchise tag in 2019, an expensive move. For a great young quarterback in Jared Goff, adding Cooks will certainly help him replicate his strong season. "Rams like this situation better", wrote Schefter on Twitter.

National Football League draft intrigue: The first night of the draft will be even more interesting with the Patriots holding two first-round picks.
