Majority of Americans say something like the Holocaust could happen again

Most Israelis don’t commemorate relatives lost in Holocaust

It was released on Thursday - to coincide with Holocaust Remembrance Day - and is the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, as marked on the Hebrew calendar.

Though 96% of respondents said the Holocaust took place, 31% believe a maximum of 2 million Jews were killed, well under the actual figure of about 6 million, reports the New York Times. Among millennials, that number rose to 66 percent. Ninety-three percent of the respondents said that all students should learn about the Holocaust in school and 80 percent said it was important to educate about the Holocaust to prevent it from happening again.

There is a broad-based consensus among Americans that schools must be responsible for providing comprehensive Holocaust education, according to the survey. Meanwhile, a research project started in 2000 by investigators with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, found in 2013 that from 15 to 20 million people had died or been imprisoned at a range of Holocaust-related sites.

Israelis stood still on Thursday for a nationwide moment of silence in remembrance of the 6 million Jewish victims of the Holocaust, as a two-minute siren wailed across the country and the nation paid respects to those systematically killed by Nazi Germany and its collaborators in World War II.

According to the organization's survey, almost one-third of all Americans (31%) and more than 4-in-10 Millennials (41%) believe that two million or fewer Jews were murdered in the Holocaust.

Some 41% of Americans and 66% of millennials had no idea about Auschwitz, the death camp in Nazi-occupied Poland where an estimated 1.1 million were killed, per WFTS.

Nearly half (45 percent) of Americans were unable to name a single concentration camp, and the number was even worse for millennials (49 percent).

The study was conducted February 23-27 by Schoen Consulting.

Around two-thirds (68 percent) of Americans believe there is anti-Semitism in the US today, and a majority (51 percent) think there is either a great deal of (17 percent) or many (34 percent) neo-Nazis in the country today. "There is no doubt that many Poles fought against the Nazi regime, but we can not deny the fact that Poland and Poles lent a hand to the annihilation" of Jews during the Holocaust, Rivlin said.

The study found that the vast majority of respondents support Holocaust education. "There remain troubling gaps in Holocaust awareness while survivors are still with us; imagine when there are no longer survivors here to tell their stories".

"On the occasion of Yom HaShoah, it is vital to open a dialogue on the state of Holocaust awareness so that the lessons learned inform the next generation", Claims Conference President Julius Berman said in a statement.

"We are alarmed that today's generation lacks some of the basic knowledge about these atrocities", he said in a statement.
