Look! iPhones Of The Future May Have Curved Screens & Gesture Controls

Apple working on'touchless control curved iPhone screen

Apple is working on future iPhones with touchless gesture control and curved screens, according to a new report from Bloomberg. Unlike the display on the Samsung Galaxy S9, this new iPhone's display will curve from inwards from top to bottom (kind of like a banana). But Apple's long-lasting distaste for curved displays may be going the way of its hatred of big-screen phones - which was legendary back in the day before the first Plus iPhone launched.

Although the OLED panel of the iPhone X curves at the bottom, that's mostly hidden from owners of the device - the goal is exclusively to make the bottom bezel as small as possible, by having the necessary screen drivers "under" it. Sources told the publication that it could be ready within two years, but Apple could choose not to go forward with the project.

Apple did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment. A larger 6.5-inch iPhone will carry an OLED display. Both the new gesture control and display technologies are still in the early research and development phases, so Apple could ultimately decide not to include them in future devices. Apple is also working on new screen technology, known as MicroLED, but that's at least three to five years away, Bloomberg News reported last month. The only one that has a slight curvature is the iPhone X. Potentially, this might be meant to serve a similar objective as the 3D Touch feature that Apple has been including in iPhones since 2015. Samsung is already working on a foldable smartphone, while Huawei is seeing increased success in Asia. While the battery management feature was the primary draw of the update, we also saw the addition of other features like iMessage for Businesses and the addition of new Animoji. However, Samsung's feature used a motion sensor on the phone's bezel rather than technology built into the display panel.
