Inspectors to visit Syria over 'chemical attack'

UN Security Council

Syria has been asked to "make the necessary arrangements for such a deployment", the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons said.

Trump said, however, that Washington was "getting more clarity" on who was responsible for the attack.

"The team is preparing to deploy to Syria shortly", the Netherlands-based organization said in a statement. Syria and Russian Federation have offered to coordinate with the authorities concerned over the inspection visit.

May's predecessor David Cameron tried and failed to get support from lawmakers to join a military strike in Syria in 2013 over suspected chemical weapons use. The White House said Trump will now not travel on Friday to the Summit of the Americas in Peru so that he can focus on the crisis.

Chemical weapons attacks have killed hundreds of people since the start of Syria's conflict, with the United Nations blaming four attacks on the Syrian government and a fifth on the Islamic State group.

Diplomats at the United Nations Security Council voted down both the USA and Russian proposals for new mechanisms for investigating chemical weapon attacks, with Russia blocking the U.S. proposal and Russia's proposal failing to secure enough votes.

In anticipation for a potential strike, Syria's military forces across the country were also simultaneously mobilising, according to a war monitor. He said: "We have a lot of options militarily, and we'll be letting you know pretty soon".

The American president also criticized Russian Federation for its support of Syrian leader Bashar Assad, saying "you shouldn't be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!'"

May is not required by law to seek parliamentary approval for offensive military action, but recent interventions in Libya and Iraq have been put to a vote.

"I don't want to telegraph what I am doing or what I am thinking", Mr. Trump said.

Trump had said Monday a response to the Syria attack would come within days.

The allegation of a chemical attack, pushed by the pro-militant sources, has been eagerly supported by the U.S. and other Western countries, who squarely pinned the blame for the unverified incident on Damascus.

France warned it would retaliate against the Assad regime if evidence emerges that it was behind the attack.

Access to the area, which has faced weeks of regime bombardment, is limited and Agence France-Presse has not independently verified the accounts.

The vote Tuesday in the 15-member Security Council was 12 in favor, with Bolivia joining Russian Federation in voting "no", and China abstaining.

Syrian opposition activists and rescuers said poison gas was used on the rebel-held town near the capital, an allegation strongly denied by the Assad government.
