Exercise, Physical Fitness Bring Cardiovascular Benefits

When looking at participants with a high genetic risk, those with a high level of cardiorespiratory fitness had a 49 percent lower risk for coronary heart disease and a 60 percent lower risk for atrial fibrillation compared to those with a low level of fitness.

In one of the largest studies on fitness and heart disease, researchers analyzed data from the UK Biobank project.

A new study now claims that children born following intensive IVF treatment may have a greater risk of developing heart disease than those conceived naturally.

The said research paper will be published online on Circulation, a scientific journal, with Ingelsson as a senior author.

Further studies were taken into consideration, to delve into exercise among people with a family history of heart disease.

That, according to them, could raise their risk of heart attacks and strokes as adults. Those people who were more active showed a decrease of nearly 50 percent of major heart incidents compared to people who were not active in their lifestyle.

For participants who were classed as having an intermediate genetic risk, those with the strongest grips were 36 percent less likely to develop coronary heart disease, and 46 percent less likely to develop atrial fibrillation when compared to participants with the same genetic risk but the weakest grips.

During the study, they found that exercise, cardiorespiratory fitness, and higher levels of grip strength helps to reduce risks of heart trouble even if you have a genetic predisposition for heart disease.

In the current study, the researchers first determined the fitness and activity levels of participants.

"It would be best to discuss a physical activity plan with a physician".

Ingelsson explained that observational studies are created to establish trends.

Given whatever little is known about the risk-modifying effects of exercise in numerous individuals who come with increased genetic risk of cardiovascular disease, these findings could have important ramifications on the public health, as the said study concludes.

The results were adjusted for age, gender, ethnicity, region, socioeconomic status, diabetes, smoking, systolic blood pressure, body mass index and use of lipid medications. But factors not included in that adjustment might also explain the study's results.

Cardiovascular medicine professor, Erik Ingelsson, MD from the Stanford University School of Medicine said that, "People should not just give up on exercise because they have a high genetic risk for heart disease".

Conclusions- Fitness and physical activity demonstrated inverse associations with incident cardiovascular disease in the general population, as well as in individuals with elevated genetic risk for these diseases.
