Britain ready for military action in days as cabinet supports May

Bashar al-Assad

Trump discussed the Syria situation with his national security team at the White House on Thursday.

What seems to be delaying that decision is the fear a strike could spark a much bigger war than anyone wants.

The BBC said May was ready to give the go-ahead for Britain to take part in action led by the United States without seeking prior approval from parliament.

"The government appears to be waiting for instructions from President Donald Trump on how to proceed", Corbyn said in a statement.

Trump has slammed Russian Federation for its partnership with "Gas Killing Animal" Assad, spurring concerns that a USA strike could lead to a conflagration with Russian Federation, which has major military facilities at Tartus and Khmeimim and works cheek-by-jowl with Syria forces that could be targeted. Trump wrote in a Thursday morning tweet that an attack could happen "very soon or not so soon at all".

British Prime Minister Theresa May won backing from her senior ministers to take unspecified action with the United States and France to deter further use of chemical weapons by Syria after a suspected poison gas attack on civilians.

On Thursday, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis urged caution on attacking Syria.

At the House hearing, Democrats grilled Mattis on the wisdom and legality of Trump ordering an attack on Syria without explicit authorization from Congress. Mattis argued it would be justified as an act of self-defense, with 2,000 US ground troops in Syria; he insisted he could not talk about military plans because an attack "is not yet in the offing". The White House said he would consult further with allies. "Could be very soon or not so soon at all!"

Some MPs have backed Britain acting against Syria, warning that the use of chemical weapons was in breach of global law and could not be allowed to go unpunished.

The drumbeat of military action appeared to grow louder, as Russian Federation stonewalled diplomatic efforts at the United Nations and France declared "proof" that Moscow's Syrian ally carried out a deadly chemical weapons attack that killed more than 40 Syrians.

Officials also said that the USA has compiled intelligence from the US and other countries, including images, that indicate the Syrian government was behind the weekend attack.

"And, I would simply say to the Prime Minister: be very careful, because you do not have a majority in Parliament".

Macron doesn't need parliamentary permission to launch an operation.

Echoing the United States stance, France's Ambassador Francois Delattre said Assad's government had reached a "point of no return" with repeated use of chemical weapons.

He said the USA is trying to get an inspection team from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to the site of the alleged attack.

It came nearly exactly a year after a chemical attack in the northern Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun killed dozens of people.

Syrian opposition activists and rescuers said poison gas was used on the rebel-held town near the capital, an allegation strongly denied by the Assad government.
