Bollywood star Salman Khan sentenced to five years for killing antelopes

Salman Khan's 15-year-old girl fan climbs wall to meet her favourite actor

He can appeal against the verdict. "Salman Khan's counsels are praying for probation", said NS Solanki, lawyer of Dushyant Singh who was co-accused in blackbuck poaching case. Khan's lawyers said he was carrying an air gun, which can not be used for hunting an antelope.

The 52-year-old actor has been taken to Jodhpur Central jail and will be spending the night there.

Anand Desai, a lawyer for Khan, said in a statement that his client has applied for an urgent hearing to the case in a higher court, which will be heard Friday morning.

The poaching happened in 1998, when Khan and his co-stars were out on a hunting trip in Bhagoda ki Dhani in the western state of Rajasthan while filming the blockbuster movie "Hum Saath Saath Hai".

Salman was charged under Section 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act and others under Section 51 read with Section 149 (unlawful assembly) of the Indian Penal Code.

Mr Bishnoi had earlier told reporters that Khan's legal team had argued for a light sentence for the offence, which carries a maximum prison term of six years. However, the court acquitted Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam, giving them "giving them the "benefit of doubt".

He is widely known to be one of the most commercially successful actors of Bollywood.

Khan's four fellow actors, who were also accused of involvement in the case, were all acquitted. The actor has now been put in the Central Jail and can apply for bail only tomorrow; which means he has no way out but to be behind the bars tonight.

The court of chief judicial magistrate sentenced him to five years of imprisonment on April 10, 2006. At the time of announcing the order, Salman would have to be in a court.

It's not the first time that Khan has found himself in court. On 24 July 2012, Rajasthan High Court finalized charges against Salman Khan and his other colleagues in the endangered blackbuck killing case, paving way for the start of the trial.

Self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, who was sent to jail after being convicted of rape, is lodged in the jail and allegedly received preferential VIP treatment in prison.
