Trump says commerce secretary will talk tariffs with EU

Canada will not bend to US steel tariff pressure in NAFTA talks, says Freeland

Trudeau "emphasized that preserving (the two nations') mutually beneficial supply chains is critical to jobs and businesses on both sides of the border", according to a summary.

The president of the Canadian Steel Producers Association says Canada may be off the hook for now from American steel and aluminum tariffs but it is still at risk from a glut of foreign steel.

The European Union on Monday urged U.S. President Donald Trump not to head down "a dead end" road of protectionism and warned of a damaging trade war over his new steel and aluminum tariffs.

He said the government needs to monitor steel imports more closely so that if shipment volumes are rising, it can react quickly to stop Canada from becoming a dumping ground into the USA market.

Her words echo those of Mexican Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo who said last week Mexico also believed the steel tariffs had nothing to do with the NAFTA talks.

"There's a lot of steel out there looking for a home", said Herman.

The steel tariff threat was seen by many to be an attempt by the Trump administration to pressure Canada and Mexico to complete the NAFTA talks - giving in to other USA demands or giving up some of their own -rather than risk the punishing steel and aluminum duties.

"Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross will be speaking with representatives of the European Union about eliminating the large Tariffs and Barriers they use against the United States of America".

The EU has been talking with partners about a legal challenge at the World Trade Organization to Mr Trump's plan and is considering safeguards to prevent steel and aluminium, diverted from the United States, flooding into Europe. He is scheduled to tour steel mills in Hamilton, Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and Regina, Sask.

Mr. Trudeau argued that Canada - the largest supply list of steel to the United States - is a key American defence ally and noted Canadian steel is used to manufacture US tanks and Canadian aluminum is in America warplanes. If there's a tariff on a piece of paper, turn it into a paper airplane and it's in a different category and no longer subject to a tariff. He is working to reassure anxious workers the government has and will continue to have their backs.

At talks in Brussels, economy ministers underlined that the European Union - the world's biggest trading bloc - supports free and open trade but that its 28 countries will respond if they are targeted by the US tariffs, which are set to enter force next week. Other trade partners, including Japan and China, have also voiced anger and pledged retaliation if the USA tariffs are enacted as expected on March 23. Justin Trudeau is touring aluminum and steel factories to show support for the industries.
