Former Michigan State University osteopathic medical school dean William Strampel, 70, has been arrested by Michigan police, and he now faces multiple unspecified charges, including at least one felony.

The AG's investigation, which is being led by special prosecutor William Forsyth, was announced amid two sentencing hearings for disgraced former MSU sports medicine doctor Larry Nassar.

"William Strampel is now lodged at the Ingham County jail", Ingham County Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth told Reuters.

John Manly, a lawyer for numerous victims, said his clients were encouraged by Strampel's arrest, saying it showed that Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette "is serious about investigating the systemic misconduct at MSU that led to the largest child sex abuse scandal in history and holding the responsible parties accountable", according to the AP.

The Attorney General's Office has scheduled a news conference for noon to update on the investigation.

Strampel announced a leave of absence for medical reasons in December past year.

Nassar, the doctor for USA Gymnastics and MSU, was sentenced to lengthy prison sentences and admitted to using his trusted position to sexually abuse young girls for more than two decades. He began steps last month to revoke his tenure and dismiss the physician-educator. "It demonstrates he is serious about investigating the systemic misconduct at MSU that led to the largest child sex abuse scandal in the history of sports, and holding the responsible parties accountable".

In May 2014, a 24-year-old Michigan State graduate contacted authorities after she visited Nassar for hip pain and, she alleged, he sexually assaulted her, massaging her breast and vaginal area while clearly aroused. Strampel later told MSU police he never meant to follow up on the protocols because they were common sense for all physicians and because Nassar had been exonerated, according to a police report the State Journal obtained through a public records request.

Nassar was sacked from MSU in September 2016 over the allegations of sexual abuse. The panel of four experts that helped the office reach that conclusion included Nassar's colleagues and one woman described as his protégé and close friend.

Strampel told police he didn't think it was necessary to follow up to make sure Nassar was following the protocol, and he did not inform other employees at the clinic about the new rules.

The State Journal reported in January that the report given to Nassar and Strampel found Nassar's conduct could open the university to lawsuits and expose patients to "unnecessary trauma based on the possibility of perceived inappropriate sexual misconduct".

Nassar was sacked in 2016 for violating the rule.

The Wall Street Journal, citing interviews and university records, reported this month that Dr. Strampel had said in 2016 that he did not believe the women who accused Dr. Nassar of abusing them, and that he did not want to fire Dr. Nassar.

Several survivors of Nassar's abuse have criticized Strampel for what they say was a flippant and insensitive response to more accusations against Nassar in 2016.

Strampel would be the first person charged in connection with the Nassar scandal outside of the trainer himself.

"Good luck", Strampel replied. A representative from Schuette's office did not immediately respond to request for comment.
