Minnesota Vikings reach out to free agent QB Drew Brees

Drew Brees to re-sign with Saints for two years $50 million Brees had been contacted by the Vikings on Monday but will stay in New Orleans

But Brees has yet to come to terms with the Saints, leaving the door open for the Vikings and other teams to reach out. This leaves a window for other teams to contact Brees.

Players can not be contacted directly until Wednesday, when the free agency signing period actually begins.

Prevailing belief is still that the Saints and Brees will agree to a deal before Wednesday.

Those teams - or any other for that matter - could simply be leverage for Brees and his camp against the Saints, but what if Brees doesn't balk?

Much of this remains hypothetical, and the most likely result is still Brees signing with the Saints. Teams like the Minnesota Vikings are trying to figure out how to piece together their best rosters while players are looking to cash in on big paydays or position themselves to be Super Bowl contenders.

Still, it's not all surprising that this deal is coming down to the wire. That's the byproduct of Brees' last contract, signed in 2016, in which New Orleans opted to kick the can down the line not one or two but three seasons.

When it finally does get done, chances are Brees' contract will look an very bad lot like that last extension he signed just four days before the 2016 season opener. If not, they will have a $6 million dead money charge this year, and the same in 2019 and 2020. They've also made a play for Drew Brees. You took a chance on me when no one else would. Last year, for example, Brees was perfectly willing to let the final year of his contract play out, without demanding extra years of guaranteed salary to be tacked on.

First and foremost, it's important to remember that there is sentimental value at stake with Brees and the Saints, but that doesn't mean he can't consider better business decisions.
