Linda Brown, center of Brown v. Board case, dies at 76

The refusal of the public school to admit Brown in 1951 then nine years old because she is black led to the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka Kansas

Peaceful Rest Funeral Chapel of Topeka independently confirmed Brown's death with HuffPost.

Born in February 1942 in Topeka, the capital of Kansas, Brown was barred from attending the elementary school four blocks away from her home in 1951 due to segregation, which allowed only white people for admission.

Brown, who died in her hometown of Topeka, Kan., this week, was at the center of the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education case that caused school segregation to be declared unconstitutional, CBS News reports.

64 years ago a young girl from Topeka brought a case that ended segregation in public schools in America. "Her legacy will be that she shared all of her life with all of us", Campbell said.

In 1954, after hearing arguments from future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, the high court exposed that "separate but equal" standard as essentially convenient legal fiction.

When she was denied enrollment into the school, Brown's pastor father sued. This event would be one of many that fueled the Civil Rights Movement. The matter made it all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States, effectively ending racial segregation in schools nationwide. President George H.W. Bush signed the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site Act of 1992 on October 26, 1992, which established Monroe as a national park.

The Virginia Museum of History & Culture writes that in the decades leading up to the 1950s, segregated black-only schools were "at the mercy of the white-controlled state government for funding".

Linda Brown was born February 20, 1942, in Topeka and was in junior high - where Topeka had already begun to integrate - by the time of the historic court ruling. Brown's place in history as a central figure in the landmark case. In addition, the district only had four schools designated for black students while there was a whopping 18 for white students.

"He believed that a child having to go so far to receive a quality education was wrong, just because of the colour of skin, and he was very, very determined that something was going to be done about this", she added.

Topeka's former Sumner School was all-white when Brown's father, Oliver, tried to enroll the family.

"I feel that after 30 years, looking back on Brown v".

The Brown Foundation for Educational Equity, Excellence and Research was opened in 1988 to honor the plaintiffs and attorneys in the case and to advocate for equal opportunity.

She sometimes said that she had little memory of the court case that changed her life, as well as the lives of millions of African Americans across the country. But her mother said her younger daughters attended integrated schools, and one of them went on to become a teacher within the Topeka school district.

"It was a bright, sunny day and we walked briskly, and I remember getting to these great big steps", she said.
