E-cigarettes produce cancer-causing chemicals in bodies of vapers

E-Cigarette Use Exposes Teens to Toxic Chemicals

Those who used both types of cigarette had significantly higher levels of unsafe chemicals, including acrylonitrile, acrolein, propylene oxide, acrylamide and crotonaldehyde, the team reported.

As the popularity of e-cigarettes continues to grow, a new warning comes from researchers: Teenagers who try vaping are ingesting numerous same chemicals that make traditional cigarettes so deadly.

The fight to get teens to not use e-cigarettes isn't any easy one because manufacturers are marketing some e-cigarettes to kids, like Juul, and then making specific flavors just for them as well. "In contrast, youth who have already begun cigarette experimentation represent a population at high risk of progression to greater levels of cigarette use later in adolescence and into adulthood", Benjamin W. Chaffee, DDS, MPH, PhD, from the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education and the department of preventive and restorative dental sciences at the University of California, San Francisco, and colleagues wrote.

In fact, the American Cancer Society just recently changed its position on e-cigarettes and recommends physicians offer them to patients as a way to quit smoking.

It is now updated in a recent report that e-cigarette contains cancer-causing chemicals. "But when they're heated to the high temperatures required for vaporization, they can produce toxic substances that are potentially carcinogenic", he said. The National Center for Biotechnology Information says,"Acrylonitrile is a highly poisonous compound used widely in the manufacture of plastics, adhesives and synthetic rubber".

Propylene oxide and crotonaldeyde are probable carcinogens, the EPA says, while acrylamide's role in causing cancer is more controversial.

In their turn, the teenagers who consume e-cigs, exclusively, presented by 300% higher amounts of toxins in their urine samples in comparison to the teenagers who don't smoke or vape. Despite massive gains in cutting cigarette use among young adults over the past few decades, e-cigarette use was the most common tobacco product among US middle- and high-schoolers between 2014 and 2016, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2016, 11 percent of high school students had used an e-cigarette in the past 30 days at the time of the survey - the CDC's definition of current use.

Many studies support the theory that kids who vape are more likely to go on to use other tobacco products, but there hasn't been much hard evidence about how directly unsafe e-cigarettes are.

The scientists looked at the effects vaping has on teenagers, and their findings are the first to find cancer-causing chemicals in the bodies of youngsters who vape.

"Electronic cigarettes generate nicotine in the vapor".
