Unlicensed Doctor Infects 40 People With HIV, Including Children

UP Quack uses single syringe to treat everyone 40 HIV+ cases reported in Bangarmau

Sushil Choudhury, the official, said police were looking for Rajendra Yadav, who fled Bangarmau, a small town in Uttar Pradesh state, after the HIV infections were detected in December previous year. The wife of a daily wage labourer, who stopped getting work after this said they suspected "something was wrong" when a large number of people in the village started falling ill, some with prolonged fever.

He said the doctor could be charged with carrying out a negligent act likely to spread infection of diseases, voluntarily causing grievous harm by using risky weapons or means, and practising medicine without having registration as a medical practitioner with the state government. India has a severe shortage of doctors and it is not uncommon for poor villagers to seek help from people like Yadav.

India had 2.1 million individuals living with HIV toward the finish of 2016, as indicated by an UNAIDS report.

Yadav would visit towns on his bike and treat patients outside. Treatment, which was cheap, nearly always involved an injection. Of those, 9,100 were youngsters under age 15.

The officials held three camps in November and December past year, after being alarmed by the high incidence of HIV reported from the district hospital and health camps held in Bangermau by an NGO.

Dr Choudhary continued: "We have lodged a police case against the quack and have started a crackdown on illegal practitioners who are playing with the lives of people".

"This was an important lead".

Mehtab Alam, a project manager for Raza Hussain Memorial Charitable Trust, said that fake doctors do not use disposable syringes, instead using glass syringes and one needle to inject hundreds of patients.

"Villagers are ignorant about hygiene", he said. The CMO said the doctors checked 566 people in Bangarmau and its adjoining villages, where 21 were found HIV positive.

The transmission of HIV through infected syringes, especially among drug users, has been on the increase, despite efforts by the Indian government to control such cases. HIV, if untreated, causes AIDS. It weakens the body's immune system, making it susceptible to various infections.
