Trump signs budget deal, bringing end to second shutdown of 2018

The Latest: Trump's new budget already outdated

After a brief government shutdown that lasted into the early hours of Friday morning, Congress passed an expansive budget deal that adds hundreds of billions of dollars to the budget for military and domestic programs, according to The Washington Post.

As of late Thursday, it's not clear if there are enough Republican votes to pass the bill in the House, meaning most likely some Democrats would have to vote for it to reach a simple majority, a fact House Speaker Paul Ryan alluded to in a Thursday morning radio interview with Hugh Hewitt.

"I can not overstate the negative impact to our troops and families' moral from all this budget uncertainty", Mattis said just hours before the House and Senate approved the deal.

U.S. politicians have passed a bipartisan budget agreement, ending the second government shutdown in as many months.

But both of Louisiana's US senators cast votes against the package, decrying the deficit-boosting two-year agreement as reckless spending.

He said their actions amounted to rank hypocrisy. "Now we have Republicans hand in hand with Democrats offering us trillion-dollar deficits". "We are trying to do too much with the size force that we have all around the world".

"I want people to feel uncomfortable, I want them to respond to people who say: How is it that you were against President Obama's deficits and are now in favor of Republican deficits?"

Despite the approval of the Democrats in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, who said that the budget agreement "would break the long cycle of spending crisis", some Democrats have complained that the bill does not address the issue of immigration.

"I understand and share the concerns about the debt", said Abraham.

"Without more Republicans in Congress, we were forced to increase spending on things we do not like or want in order to finally, after many years of depletion, take care of our Military", Trump said.

And liberal stalwarts including top House Democrat Nancy Pelosi were also in revolt because the deal does nothing to protect immigrants known as "Dreamers", who were brought to the USA illegally as children, from deportation.

Lawmakers are struggling to develop a bipartisan solution that would include $25 billion that Trump wants for his promised border wall and other border security measures. But it put Paul - and conservative complaints about the sweeping budget agreement negotiated this week by congressional leaders - in the spotlight.

The spending deal also bypassed the contentious immigration issues that held up a previous stopgap spending bill in January, resulting in a three-day shutdown.

"We will effectively shut down the federal government for no good reason", said Senator John Cornyn, as his requests to move to a vote were repeatedly rejected by Mr Paul. The effects were expected to be minimal given that it started and is expected to finish with Trump's signature before most of the federal workforce arrives at work Friday morning. After the first shutdown provided a short-term fix to the bill, the recent vote by Congress has helped federal agencies stay open with a working budget. "I hope that we will end up passing something".

About $160 billion would go to the Pentagon and about $128 billion to non-defense programs.

"Give us a chance to allay the fear that is in the hearts of these Dreamers and their families, and remove the tears from the Statue of Liberty observing what is happening here", she said. The bill also offers $90 billion in hurricane relief for Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico.
