Terror bereaved seek justice after British extremists captured

Belgian national Salah Abdeslam suspect of Paris attacks

Alexanda Amon Kotey and El Shafee el-Sheikh, both from Britain, were captured in January in eastern Syria by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces. IS reportedly titled the video "A Second Message to America" in reference to the execution of journalist James Foley in August 2014.

Alexanda Kotey and El Shafee Elsheikh, believed to have been part of Islamic State's brutal executions gang, were detained by US-allied Kurdish militia fighters in January, the New York Times (NYT) said.

Meanwhile a USA defence official announced on Thursday that fellow Briton El Shafee el-Sheikh, another "Beatles" member, had also been captured by Syrian rebel forces.

The cell was believed to be behind the killing of American journalist James Foley and numerous Western aid workers.

Thomas, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command, said American officials have been able to interrogate the two detainees.

The capture of Elsheikh and Kotey could yield precious intelligence about what happened to those fighters as IS was defeated on the battlefield, and information about the fate of their hostages, said Shiraz Maher, a senior research fellow at the International Center for the Study of Radicalization and Political Violence at King's College London.

She says "their crimes are beyond imagination".

U.S. officials believe the "execution cell" beheaded more than 27 Western hostages and tortured many more.

The group, which also included "Jihadi John" Mohammed Emwazi and Aine Davis, was nicknamed The Beatles by hostages because their English accents set them apart from other foreign fighters. AUS-led coalition has pushed Daesh out of most of the territory it controlled in Iraq and Syria, but its leader, Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, who proclaimed the self-styled caliphate in 2014, remains at large.

US officials did not provide any other details of the capture, but said the USA government works closely with its coalition partners on the disposition of detainees held by the SDF.

One former hostage has said the pair should be brought before a British court, while the mother of murdered U.S. journalist James Foley said she would like to see them face justice in the United States.

"The first thought was relief finally to know that the people that were involved in my dad's murder have been caught".

The Home Secretary can deprive someone of their British citizenship if they are satisfied taking the measure is "conducive to the public good", such as in national security cases.

Last year, the US State Department said London-born Kotey had "likely" taken part in executions and used "exceptionally cruel torture methods, including electric shock and waterboarding".

USA officials have interrogated the men, who were part of the IS cell that captured, tortured and beheaded more than two dozen hostages, including American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff and American aid worker Peter Kassig.

But Mr Williamson's deputy at Defence Tobias Ellwood suggested they should be put on trial for war crimes at The Hague.

"This is the beginning of a process that will bring them eventually, hopefully, to a trial", he told Sky News.

"What I'm looking for is justice and Guantanamo is a denial of justice", he told The Associated Press on Friday. Justice is just what I want. The Daily Telegraph newspaper said it understood that Britain would not hinder any moves to extradite the pair to the United States.
