Syria threatens 'more surprises' following downing of Israeli warplane

UN officials, Church leaders decry escalating situation in Syria

Israel has repeatedly warned that it will not allow Iran to establish a military presence on its northern border for any future attacks on the Jewish state.

Israel, in war with Hezbollah for more than 30 years, considers Iranian military presence in Syria a casus belli.

NATO member Turkey recently began attacking US -backed Syrian Kurdish fighters in the country's north, the same Kurdish fighters who helped defeat Islamic State.

"We urge all parties involved to exercise restraint and to avoid any actions that could lead to an even greater complication of the situation". Creating threats to life and security of Russian service personnel, who are in the Syrian Arab Republic at the invitation of its legitimate government in order to assist the fight against terrorists, is absolutely unacceptable.

He continued to put Syria on warning that Israel will immediately annihilate any threat in the skies - as it has done before.

"Assad and Hezbollah are the same, and if there will be an attack against us, we will not be obligated to act only against the source of the attack", he said. Israel has opted for action, rather than allowing the situation to fester until it reaches the scale of other strategic threats facing the country-namely the over 100,000 rockets and missiles now in Hezbollah's arsenal.

Some Israeli reports claimed that a direct hit had not occurred and that shrapnel from an exploding missile had pierced through the warplane.

Also on February 10, according to the Israeli paper Haaretz, Kurdish fighters backed and armed by the USA shot down a Turkish attack helicopter.

The drone had been sighted taking off from a base in Syria, and was intercepted after it crossed into Israeli territory, said an Israeli spokesman. It said the station was hit while drones were on regular missions in the country's desert in Homs province. On Saturday, Israel's military said it shot down an Iranian drone that took off from a base in Syria and infiltrated Israeli airspace. Subsequent attacks were carried out against four additional Iranian targets and eight Syrian sites.

In the Israeli attack, one of its F16 jets was shot down by intense anti-aircraft missile fire. The world's leading state sponsor of terrorism that pledges to wipe Israel off the map has become much more emboldened since the Obama administration's disastrous nuclear deal offered up billions of dollars in sanctions relief. "We agreed that coordination between our armies would continue", Netanyahu said in a televised statement.

In other words, Russian Federation has been able to thread the hard needle that allowed it to back Syria and indirectly aid Iran for two years plus without making an outright enemy of Israel.

Both moves threaten Israel from the north. Both pilots suffered injuries, and ejected after reaching Israeli territory. DW spoke with Middle East expert Gil Murciano about the conflict, and Germany's potential role as mediator. "Israel holds Iran and its Syrian host responsible for today's aggression".

A member of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) walks on a street with his weapon in the northern Syrian town of Manbij on August 7, 2016, as SDF comb the city in search of the last remaining jihadists, a day after they retook it from the Islamic State.

The new Israeli raids come hours after an earlier one in central Syria. For Israel, meanwhile, "the year is 1938 and Iran is Germany".

Israel called the new escalation "severe violation of Israeli sovereignty".

Israel has the region's most powerful military.

One of the most confounding - and unsafe - aspects of the six-year conflict in Syria is that its roster of combatants continues to broaden. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says around 80 civilians have been killed so far, along with more than 160 Kurdish fighters. "Those who have to leave Syria are the ones who have not been permitted by the Syrian government", said Ali Akbar Velayati, the Head of the Strategic Research Center of Iran's Expediency Council, on Wednesday.
