Moscow may block Youtube, Instagram due to latest Navalny video

A video posted by model Nastya Rybka led to a Kremlin opposition investigation into a minister's meeting with an oligarch

The materials show Deripaska and Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Prikhodko meeting on Deripaska's yacht in 2016, Navalny says.

Russian Federation may block both YouTube and Instagram after videos showing oligarch Oleg Deripaska were uploaded to the social media sites. "The site still opens through some providers, but that is temporary", Navalny, who has accused Roskomnadzor of "censorship", said in a subsequent tweet.

Soon after, Deripaska hit Navalny with a court order for the removal of 14 Instagram posts and seven YouTube videos. Russia's communications regulator Roskomnadzor then blacklisted the materials.

Deripaska has been linked to President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who has been indicted in US special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 USA election.

A February 14 deadline that Navalny said was set by Roskomnadzor passed without incident, but reports that was inaccessible for many in Russian Federation began flowing in on February 15.

Miss Rybka posted several videos in 2016 showing Deripaska on his yacht talking with Deputy Prime minister Prikhodko. Russian Federation banned Navalny from running in next month's presidential election.

Navalny says Rybka - whose real name is Anastasiya Vashukevich, according to the Guardian - claimed in a book she published to have met Deripaska and other oligarchs while working as an escort.

Third, the photographs and videos in question had been publicly available on Rybka's Instagram account and her YouTube channel at least for two years, but Deripaska never before complained that they violated his privacy.

"It's impossible for internet providers to block certain pages on Instagram and YouTube", and they'll have to block the services unless the material singled out by the watchdog is deleted, said Karen Kazaryan, chief analyst at the Russian Association for Electronic Communications, an internet lobby group.

Mr. Navalny and his team created mirror websites and called on supporters to use virtual private networks, or VPNs, which enable them to avoid access restrictions.

The country has said it could block the platforms if the images and videos are not removed, according to The New York Times. Roskomnadzor by the decision of the Ust-Labinsk district court chose to lock in these materials as interim measure on the suit. It is up to interpretation whether the "public interest" exception would include Deripaska, who is known to be close to Putin and whose companies do business with the Russian Federation.

With most news media outlets controlled by the government, Mr. Navalny's website is virtually his only vehicle for distributing his investigations of corruption among members of Mr. Putin's inner circle.
