Gay figure skater Adam Rippon refused meeting with VP Mike Pence

Vice President Mike Pence speaks to reporters with Alaska Gov. Bill Walker at his side during an Alaska visit at Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson in Anchorage on Monday Feb. 5 2018

"@Adaripp I want you to know we are FOR YOU", Pence wrote. I am proud of you and ALL OF OUR GREAT athletes and my only hope for you and all of #TeamUSA is to bring home the gold. His press secretary, Alyssa Farah, sent Brennan the following message: "The vice president is proud to lead the USA delegation to the Olympics and support America's incredible athletes".

Rippon, who has said he could hardly believe he had made it to the Olympics and that seeing the Olympic rings from his room in the athletes' village was incredibly inspiring, said he thought it was important for athletes to speak up - but that he also needed to get through the Games.

Pence also accused Rippon of being duped by "fake news" after the Pennsylvania native accused him of being anti-LGBT. "If he's OK with what's being said about people and Americans and foreigners and about different countries that are being called 'sh**holes", I think he should really go to church'. The USOC declined to comment.

Rippon may actually have to miss the meet-and-greet to participate in the team figure skating competition.

"If I had the chance to meet him afterwards, after I'm finished competing, there might be a possibility to have an open conversation", Rippon said last month.

South Korea has asked the United Nations for an exemption to allow a U.N. -sanctioned North Korean official, Choe Hwi, to attend the opening ceremony with Kim Yo Jong. Rippon said in a January 17 interview with USA Today.

After a year of escalating rhetoric between the Pyongyang and Washington, tensions on the Korean peninsula have eased after the North's leader Kim Jong Un said in a New Year's address he was willing to open discussions with Seoul.

The Olympic skater was referring to a commonly held belief in the LGBT community that supported gay conversion therapy when he was a congressional candidate in IN, based on a vague statement he made in 2000 that "resources should be directed toward those institutions which provide assistance to those seeking to change their sexual behavior." has since denied ever supporting gay conversion therapy.

"To have somebody leading the delegation that's directly attacked the LGBTQ community, and a Cabinet in general that just sort of stands against us and has tried to do things to set us back, it just seems like a bad fit", Kenworthy said.

"The support that I've gotten from people in my hometown has kind of been overwhelming", he said. Learning about the Olympian's comments, Pence's Press Secretary Alyssa Farah told reporters that the accusation was false. This wasn't something that just fell out of my mouth.

Parker reported from Tokyo.

The sister, Kim Yo Jong, and other members of her entourage will travel by private jet to Seoul's Incheon International Airport on Friday afternoon, North Korea informed the South on Thursday.
