Facebook still uncool among teens, report says

Facebook to lose HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of young Brits in 2018 – here's where they're all going

There could be many reasons for Facebook's decline in popularity amongst the younger generation, part of it may be that Facebook is no longer seen as the "cool" social media platform. Facebook users under the age of 12 will decrease by 9.3 percent in the upcoming year, according to eMarketer, while people ages 12 to 17, and 18 to 24, respectively, will decline by 5.6 percent and 5.8 percent. eMarketer says they have never predicted a decline for all three of those age groups.

In the age of Facebook, this is the first time eMarketer has predicted a decline in usage among 18-to-24s and those younger than 12.

Facebook will lose 2 million users under 25 in the USA this year while Snapchat will add 1.9 million, EMarketer said on Monday, citing its own report. And that after years of Facebook's lack of privacy jeopardizing future jobs and college offers, teens are more interested in a platform like Snapchat where you can only ever be seen by people you've added and where postings disappear.

While its domestic growth will slow to below 1%, Facebook is still on track to lead the pack in 2018 with 169.5 million domestic users.

While the over-55s are flocking to the social media site, teens and young adults are ditching it just as fast, according to a new report.

Facebook is still growing, it said, and will reach 169.5 million US users this year, which is growth of just under 1 per cent year-on-year. This year, the app is set to add 1.9 million U.S. users under the age of 25.

More than 500,000 new over-55s are expected to sign up to Facebook in 2018, which will leave 6.4mln 55 to 65-year-olds on the platform - the second biggest demographic after 16 to 34-year-olds.

"Snapchat could eventually experience more growth in older age groups, since it's redesigning its platform to be easier to use", eMarketer principal analyst Debra Aho Williamson said in the blogpost that accompanied the comapany's research. At the same time, Facebook's proportion of social network users in the world is forecasted to decline. Children under ten are already on social media.

"But not all of those users are migrating to Instagram". Snapchat, owned by Snap (SNAP), may now be siphoning away more users than expected. "That's the predicament Facebook is in".

The problem of privacy reared its head again on Monday as a German court ruled Facebook's default privacy setting and use of personal data are against consumer laws in the country.
