Europa League Soccer Skirmish Leaves One Officer Dead In Bilbao, Spain

Police officer dies after fans clash before Athletic Bilbao-Spartak Moscow tie

Alexander Vishnevsky, a sports journalist residing in Spain, told Sputnik the fountain of articles in local media about "allegedly radical, allegedly ultra-fascist fans arriving to beat up people and run riots" had disseminated panic among residents, even those not interested in sports.

A fantastic first half showing last week saw Athletic lead 3-1 ahead of the San Mames clash but it was Spartak who would strike first in Bilbao, Luis Adriano heading home.

The incident also raised fears over hooliganism at this summer's World Cup which will be hosted by Russian Federation.

The incident may have future implications as the Bilbao mayor Juan Mari Aburto has threatened to pull out as a host city during the Euro 2020 if UEFA, European soccer's governing organization, fails to take action against violence surrounding soccer.

Police said they had detained nine people - including three Russians and a Pole - whom Moscow's Sport Express daily identified as right-wing Spartak hooligans and left-wing Basques.

The La Liga club had emerged victorious in the first leg in Russian Federation last week, running out 3-1 winners in Moscow while Spartak won the second leg 2-1 meaning Athletic move onto the next round.

Around 700 police and a further 200 private security guards were said to be in place in Bilbao and the San Mames stadium.

The police officer died in hospital, where he had been taken following a heart attack when the regional Basque Country police force Ertzaintza was trying to stop street battles between supporters of the two teams, the police said.

La Liga president Javier Tebas added: "Ultra violence has claimed the life of a public servant - that's enough".

The fighting spread onto the streets near the stadium and police struggled to restore order.

As per a Mirror report, Hundreds of Russian fans attempted to travel to Spain without tickets while breaching the travel orders in process.

More than 500 police officers were deployed ahead of the game to try and prevent fan trouble.

Six years ago, a fan died in Bilbao in clashes after a match between Athletic and German club Schalke.
