British Judge Upholds Assange Warrant

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange

A court decision is due on Tuesday on whether a United Kingdom arrest warrant against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is still valid.

The outstanding warrant stands from 2012, which is in connections with the Swedish investigation, even through it was closed down a year ago.

Senior district judge Emma Arbuthnot is due to give her ruling, although either side can appeal against the decision.

Assange tweeted to condemn "wall to wall fake news stating the government won today's hearing", insisting his legal team was still fighting the warrant on other grounds.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange addresses the media from the balcony of Ecuador's London embassy. He fled there after losing a series of court battles to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he faced allegations of sexual assault against two women.

London police responded to reports of a suspicious package at Ecuador's embassy in the city on Tuesday.

The judge said that if Assange wanted the warrant lifted he should surrender to authorities and come to court.

Swedish prosecutors dropped the case past year, saying all possible leads had been "exhausted".

Assange has refused to leave the embassy, claiming he fears being extradited to the United States over WikiLeaks' publication of secret U.S. military documents and diplomatic cables in 2010.

But even if the judge had dropped the British arrest warrant, WikiLeaks warned Assange could face life in prison in the United States on charges of espionage, conspiracy and theft related to WikiLeaks' publishing of secret USA government cables.

But even if Assange wins, he might decide to remain in the embassy because of fears over a possible secret US indictment against him.

Assange has been living in a tiny room in the Ecuadoran Embassy, and his organization continues to release sensitive documents on the Internet.

"In order to proceed with the case, Julian Assange would have to be formally notified of the criminal suspicions against him".
