Amnesty demands release of jailed Maldives judges

Maldives President declares state of emergency amid political crisis

Mohamed Nasheed, an exiled former president of the Maldives, has urged the Indian government to militarily intervene in the archipelago┬┤s current political crisis after President Abdulla Yameen declared a 15-day state of emergency.

President Yameen late Monday declared a state of emergency after his last ditch attempt to convince the top court to revoke the order failed after the apex court rejected the government's "legal and judicial" concerns over the order.

Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen had earlier suspended Parliament and ordered the Army to resist any moves by the Supreme Court to impeach the President.

With Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen declaring a state of emergency amid a political crisis in the country, the Indian government on Monday cautioned citizens against travelling to the Maldives. Yameen also sacked two police chiefs after the court's decision.

A former president of Maldives, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom who was in power for three decades, was also arrested last night as a crackdown on the opposition intensifies.

The court order opens the way for a return to the normal functioning of Parliament, which, the statement said, is a fundamental pillar of democracy.

The emergency decree gave security forces sweeping powers to make arrests, curtailed the authority of the judiciary and scrapped immunity granted to Supreme Court judges. Yameen accused judges of plotting to overthrow him and said the emergency was imposed to investigate this plot.

"Maldivians have had enough of this criminal and illegal regime", Nasheed said.

Judges are "without any food now", Suood said, adding that the chief justice asked the public "to protect him and the institution".

He claimed he was ousted as president and made to resign at gunpoint by police and military officers in February 2012.

Mr Nasheed called on India to put pressure on the Maldives government to release opposition detainees.

The United Nations, United States and other foreign governments have urged the Maldives to respect the court order. He lost the 2013 election to Yameen and then was convicted under Maldives' anti-terrorism laws in a trial widely criticised by global rights groups.

India, China and the United Kingdom have issued travel warnings to the country that is made up of 26 coral atolls and 1,192 individual islands.

He was convicted on terrorism crimes in 2015, which according to critics and Amnesty International is "politically motivated".

Nasheed, who is now in Sri Lanka, also urged the United States to block financial transactions of the government led by President Abdulla Yameen.
