Ahed Tamimi tried behind closed doors

The city of Jenin

It is in this odd sense that it is Israelis, not Palestinians, who experience humiliation in the current situation-despite Israel being in total control of every aspect of the Palestinian life experience, which for Palestinians involves a daily encounter with oppressive policies created to frighten, humiliate, and subjugate.

Palestinian protester Ahed Tamimi went on trial behind closed doors in an Israeli military court Tuesday for slapping and punching two Israeli soldiers - the opening of a high-profile case against the teen who is seen as a Joan of Arc-like heroine. It also spoke to Luisa Morgantini, the former vice president of the European Parliament (EP).

Twenty-three Palestinians have been killed since Trump's declaration on December 6, a lot of them in clashes with Israeli forces.

For Palestinians, Ms Tamimi has become a "David and Goliath" style figure challenging the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land, a representative of the estimated 300 Palestinian children held in Israeli jails.

The charges relate to events in the video and five other incidents.

"In the course of all this, her 17-year-old cousin [Musab Firas al-Tamimi] was shot in the head and killed". He required intensive surgery to dislodge the rubber bullet.

Tamimi comes from a family well-known in the West Bank for inciting and provoking IDF soldiers while recording their reactions. The recent incident of her slapping a soldier was recorded and went viral on social media.

Israeli authorities picked her up on 12 separate charges of aggravated assault and incitement, which could potentially be punishable by 10 years in prison.

The UN experts called for her release, saying that future hearings should be held in strict accordance with global legal standards. She was arrested at her home December 19 in the middle of the night and has been in detention ever since. "This violates the fundamental legal guarantee to have access to counsel during interrogation", said José Guevara, Chair of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. Tamimi's father expressed his fear for his daughter and wife, who is also on trial. "I am scared, worried, sad, everything".

"My generation is stronger", she said, adding that they realize the power of a camera.

Retired Israeli law professor Emanuel Gross argued that worldwide law permits an occupying power to set up military courts and that Israel's system is in line with those conventions.

Ahed Tamimi is the more aggressive of the two in the video. Tamimi is one of an estimated 350 Palestinian minors in Israeli jails.

Israel has framed Tamimi's actions as purely criminal offenses. Ahed has been detained twice under the same circumstances.

Amnesty International has called for her immediate release, saying her "continued detention is a desperate attempt to intimidate Palestinian children who dare to stand up to repression by occupying forces".

When their terms are being renewed, detainees appear before Israeli military courts - often without full knowledge of the allegations against them.

When asked if he had any hopes for the upcoming trial he said "No, they are a state above the law".

Ahed Tamimi is one of some 350 Palestinian children now in Israeli military detention.

The Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Israel has ratified, states that minors can only be deprived of liberty as a last resort and for the shortest appropriate time, said Michael Lynk, a United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, in a statement. She accused the court of closing the proceedings to prevent the world from watching.
