Abbas to Speak at UN Security Council After Bolting Talks with Israel

Israel responds to Hamas attack

The Arab foreign ministers renewed their rejection of President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital and asserted their support to all decisions by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas under the framework of the Palestine Liberation Organization, in the face of recognition by the U.S. administration of Jerusalem as the capital of the occupying state. In a speech to the Palestine Liberation Organization's Central Council, Abbas called the reported peace plane "the slap in the face of the century", according to the Jerusalem Post.

"By continuing to act against the United States and seeking unilateral action against Israel, Abbas is completely misreading today's reality and harming the prospects for a better future for his people", he continued. The UNRWA is funded nearly entirely by voluntary contributions from United Nations member states.

The United States is one of the five permanent members of the Security Council, however; it is likely the application won't make it out of the UNSC chamber, since the US will probably would veto the application.

In this context, the minister sounded the alarm to the shortage in funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to enable it continue its duty towards a "child refugee right's to school, medicine and a decent life".

He also announced that the council will hold an informal meeting February 22 on the Palestinians where former US president Jimmy Carter, former United Nations humanitarian chief Jan Egeland and former UNRWA chief Karen AbuZayd.

Earlier on in the day, the Arab League's Foreign Ministers Council was held in the Egyptian capital in a follow-up to the previous sessions in December and January on Washington's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Such meetings are held outside the councils and members are not required to attend. An outraged Abbas rejected the decision, saying the US could no longer be an acceptable mediator in the peace process. "To get historic results, we need courageous leaders".
