Yemen's Houthi Rebels Shoot Down Saudi Warplane Over Sanaa

Part of the meeting held in Sana'a Yemen

Anti-Houthi forces, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, have intensified an offensive against the Iran-aligned group that controls most of northern Yemen since former President Ali Abdullah Saleh was killed after he switched sides in Yemen's almost three-year-old civil war.

Colonel Turki Al-Malki, Spokesman of the Joint Coalition Forces, disclosed that a Saudi Royal Air Force fighter jet was exposed to a technical failure after implementing one of the operational tasks to support legitimacy in Yemen, which resulted in its crash inside the operation area with no injuries to the aircraft's crew. The outlet identified the jet as a British-made Panavia Tornado.

The Houthis shot down the F-15 fighter with a ground-to-air missile, the Houthi-affiliated Saba news agency reported, citing the army's statement. "Missiles fired at Saudi Arabia belong to Yemen which have been overhauled and their range has been increased", Jafari said.

"Islamic Republic of Iran has never had the means to send missiles to Yemen and the USA officials know that the missiles fired at Saudi Arabia have been developed by the Yemenis to have a greater range", he added. The intervention has yielded modest military gains, as large parts of the country are still under control of the Houthi rebel group.

The fighting has killed at least 10,000 Yemeni civilians and driven millions to the brink of starvation.

The Houthi rebels seized Yemen's capital of Sanaa in 2014, forcing the country's internationally recognized president, Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, to temporarily flee to Saudi Arabia.
