Saudi coalition set to provide $1.5bn in humanitarian aid for Yemen

Arab coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki

A Saudi-led military coalition on Monday announced $1.5bn in new humanitarian aid for Yemen, after the United Nations made what it called a record appeal for assistance for the war-ravaged country.

Saudi Arabia and its embassies overseas have been keen to promote the country's recent humanitarian efforts in Yemen, including a deposit of $2 billion in Yemen's central bank last week following an urgent appeal.

"The coalition will coordinate".

"The coalition will provide 1.5 billion USA dollars in humanitarian assistance", said the coalition in a statement.

A statement said the coalition would also help expand the capacities of Yemeni ports to boost imports of aid and cargo to 1.4m tonnes annually, up from 1.1m a year ago.

It will also increase the capacities of Yemeni ports to receive aid and cargo shipments, and set up 17 "safe-passage corridors" for humanitarian groups.

Russian Federation on Monday called for an end to fighting in Yemen, saying there could be no military solution to the almost four-year war between Huthi rebels and the Saudi-backed government.

Saudi Arabia last week deposited $2 billion in Yemen's central bank to prop up the currency and ease hunger.

To date, more than 10,000 people have died during the war in Yemen and more than two million people have been displaced since fighting broke out, according to the UN.

With most of the country lacking access to safe water and sanitation, more than 1 million suspected cases of cholera and more than 2,230 deaths were reported in Yemen past year, according to the World Health Organization.

The $2.96-billion will be used to respond to an ever-broadening crisis in Yemen, where war, looming starvation and cholera have killed thousands and put millions of lives at risk.

More than 11.3 million Yemenis "urgently require assistance to survive", United Nations aid agency OCHA said in a statement.

While stressing that Yemeni children are bearing the brunt of what it referred to as the "the worst diphtheria outbreak for a generation", the group noted that at least 52 people, mostly children under 15, have been killed by the disease.

Yemen's humanitarian situation worsened due to a crippling blockade of rebel-held ports by the Saudi-led coalition.

Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen Jamie McGoldrick noted that Humanitarian assistance would not solve the crisis in the country, but it would be a lifeline for millions of people.

The minister also assured his country's support to Saudi humanitarian efforts in alleviating the suffering of Yemeni people and solving Yemen's ongoing crisis caused by Iran proxies, namely the Houthi coup militias which violated worldwide laws especially UN Security Council Resolution 2216, the Gulf Initiative and its implementation mechanism and the outcomes of Yemen's Comprehensive National Dialogue Conference.
