Research provides new insight into head hits, CTE

Alarming new BU study shows impacts, not just concussions, lead to brain disease

- New research out of Boston University's CTE Center suggests that smaller blows to one's head-hits that fail to register any symptoms of a concussion-can also or may be the cause of the neurodegenerative disease CTE.

Hockey Hall of Famer and Islanders great Clark Gillies says the study proves what many have known all along: Getting hit in the head, concussion or not, is not a good thing. Over the summer, a group of researchers examined the brains of 111 National Football League players and published a study showing that 110 of them suffered from CTE.

"Collectively, these results raise concern that repetitive neurotrauma, independent of concussion, may induce early CTE brain pathologies, even in teenagers and young adults", reseachers wrote in the study.

Concussions were previously seen as the major cause of CTE, but new data suggests that frequent hits to the head, not necessarily concussions, bring about CTE. "What it tells us is as these hits are occurring even in the early aftermath - days, weeks, months after these injuries, this disease is already being kicked off".

For more than a decade, researchers trying to make sense of the mysterious degenerative brain disease afflicting football players and other contact-sport athletes have focused on the threat posed by concussions. "We now have solid scientific evidence to say that is so". She said she plans to be vigilant but still support her children as they play sports. The middle linebacker for the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins now suffers from dementia and has been diagnosed with probable CTE. The brains of those who did not experience head injuries did not have the same signs, the researchers state.

Alarming new BU study shows impacts, not just concussions, lead to brain disease

"On the football field, we're paying attention to the bright, shiny object - concussion - because it's obvious", said Dr. "[With] all of these people, we need to take the focus off concussion and find out if they have injured brains", Goldstein said, in an interview with NPR. Lee Goldstein, who is with Boston University. The study was led by researchers at Boston University and the VA Boston Healthcare System.

Dr. Comstock is an expert in the subject area but was not involved in the study. The researchers hypothesized that damaged blood vessels leaking into brain tissue may cause early CTE.

Sure enough, these deposits appeared to start in the deep recesses of the brain's folds, where the hallmarks of full-fledged CTE are most clearly seen in humans too.

All of our studies are pointing towards subconcussive impacts causing a change in the brain. Concussion is "not only not correlated, we can decouple it", said Goldstein. "This is really preserving the future for football". They found early evidence of CTE.
