Kyrgios Edges Tsonga In Melbourne Thriller

Round one results at the Australian Tennis Open

Another day of searing heat is likely to push players to the limit at the Australian Open with Nick Kyrgios set to headline day-five proceedings on Rod Laver Arena.

"When I saw him out here I was so nervous".

"Why the f*** did I play doubles?", he was heard yelling.

The Australian failed to go beyond the second round of a major in 2017 but appears fully focused and up for the task at the first Grand Slam of this season as he booked a fourth-round tie with Grigor Dimitrov. I didn't really say anything. "I'm just going to learn from it and keep going".

"[With Will] that was incredible".

"But I don't think that's enough against Kyrgios".

"It was surreal seeing him tonight ..."

Sydney man Jamie Zhu, who describes himself online as an "Australian social media entertainer from Sydney", has bragged about being evicted from Hisense Arena during Nick Kyrgios's second round match.

"I knew my best chance was probably to get in a couple breakers. 'Bring him down here and I'll kick his ass" (literally "settle his account")', Tsonga said.

"Because on the set point, in between the first serve and the second, the guy was talking to me and telling me, 'You are under pressure now, you are under pressure now, ' when I was bouncing my balls", Tsonga said. The guy was feeling safe because he was upstairs (in the stands).

"I like the atmosphere when two sets of the crowd are going against each other, it's just when it crosses the line when you're in the middle of a rally and you're literally about to make contact and they make sound on objective", he said.

For the victor of that match, third seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov looms as a possible fourth round opponent. "Why not play even better in the next round".

But the 22-year-old effectively gave the second set away at 2-2 in the second set, spooning the simplest of half-volleys long as he dropped his serve in four quick points.

Smith was noticed by fans on the big screen during the third set, leading some to sing 'Bad boys, bad boys, what you gonna do?' at the four-time Grammy Award victor - a nod to the song used in the actor's popular film series Bad Boys.

Once again Tsonga started quickly, building a 5-2 lead, though Kyrgios forced back control, and won the final five points to claim victory.

He looks rattled at the moment, netting a backhand slice to make it 0-30, and at 15-30 Kyrgios earns two break points with a deft volley.

Top-seed Rafael Nadal lookedin ominous form as he stormed past Damir Dzumhur 6-1 6-3 6-1 in one hour 50 minutes to reach the last 16 in Melbourne for the 11th time.
