Intel Confirms Newer Chips Impacted By Spectre, Meltdown Patches

Windows 10

Users who haven't installed the latest BIOS are not affected, and Intel says that new patches will enter the validation phase early next week.

The process of patching computer processors vulnerable to Meltdown and Spectre threats is encountering a few bumps in the road. As we continue these efforts, I would like to express my appreciation to many of our partners, including Dell, HPE, HPI, Lenovo and Microsoft, for joining our Security-First Pledge.

Navin Shenoy is executive vice president and general manager of the Data Center Group at Intel Corporation.

The company has issued a new warning about the stability issues and recommends system manufacturers, software vendors, and cloud providers test its beta microcode updates before the final release.

Given that both CPU flaws - Meltdown and Spectre - have effectively sat dormant for years, throwing court cases at Intel and AMD may seem unfair. In a new blog post published yesterday, the exec added that recent patches for the newer Ivy Bridge, Sandy Bridge, Skylake, and Kaby Lake architectures can cause similar reboot issues (via Engadget). As for the Spectre and Meltdown patches, more benchmarks will likely be coming down the pipeline soon, so stay tuned. And unfortunately, Intel just confirmed that its firmware fix for Spectre might do the same thing on newer machines that pack Kaby Lake and Skylake processors.

"ARM Holdings PLC, the company that licenses the ARM architecture to Apple, admits that it was notified of the Security Vulnerabilities in June 2017 by Google's Project Zero and that it immediately notified its architecture licensees (presumably, including Apple) who create their own processor designs of the Security Vulnerabilities", says the lawsuit issued by Anthony Bartling and Jacqueline Olson in a United States district court in San Jose.

And Intel said that some website servers slowed down by 2 percent as a result of the patch.

Intel says workloads with more user/kernel privilege changes and which spend a lot of time in privileged mode are more adversely impacted.

Intel has published the results of these tests and promised to issue more performance data and benchmarks of older systems as quickly as possible.

Google last week urged the whole industry to adopt Retpoline because it mitigated the attack but had nearly no negative performance impact on current hardware.
