Facebook to Have Users Decide What Is 'High Quality' News

Facebook Is Going To Let Users Rank News Credibility

According to the site, it's already conducted a test survey among "a diverse and representative sample of people using Facebook across the United States", and thus formed an initial ranking of media sources that its users consider to be trustworthy.

As a result of the changes, people can expect the level of news in the News Feed to drop from the current 5 percent to 4 percent, Zuckerberg said.

"There's too much sensationalism, misinformation and polarization in the world today", Zuckerberg said.

Facebook says it will start prioritizing news from outlets that its users think are "trustworthy".

Facebook has been struggling to figure out its role as a dominant distributor of information in an era of fake news, foreign manipulation, and dwindling revenues for many media organizations. "This data will help to inform ranking in News Feed". "Broadly trusted" news outlets that are affirmed by a cross-section of users may see a huge boost in readership, while those that receive poor ratings could see their web traffic decline significantly. Rather, they'll let the users decide what counts as a trusted source. "It will only shift the balance of news you see towards sources that are determined to be trusted by the community".

On Friday, the California giant announced in a blog post that it is altering the algorithm for picking news to show in its News Feed to prioritise three factors: Whether the news is considered "trustworthy", whether it is "informative", and whether it is "relevant to people's local community".

Starting Monday, the company will roll out more surveys to more users, asking them to share their thoughts on various media sources.

Facebook won't be assessing the trustworthiness of news outlets itself. So it views community feedback as the most suitable method.

These aren't foolproof remedies for avoiding fake and biased sources on Facebook - but as Facebook continues to make changes to its News Feed, they may become increasingly important.

Facebook and other social media sites are under pressure in Washington to take more ownership of their content and its policing.
