Burger King explains net neutrality with a $26 Whopper

Net neutrality explainer from Burger King

The 2:50 video shows visibly frustrated Burger King patrons who are absolutely confused as to why they have to pay more to get their Whopper quickly. People purchasing burgers at the regular price had to wait longer to receive their orders than customers who paid more for faster service.

Burger King obviously made this video just so we would blog about it, and yet we can't resist the delicious, flame-broiled taste of net neutrality content.

On December 14 a year ago, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to end rules that prevent internet service providers choosing to speed up or slow down access to certain websites or apps, charging customers for the services they use.

Near the end of the ad, text appears on the screen pushing people to a change.org petition to put the net neutrality rules back in effect.

Burger King released an ad trying to teach customers about net neutrality using Whoppers. One previously upset man said that he "didn't think that ordering a Whopper would really open my eyes up to net neutrality". There's also a middle tier, a "Fast MBPS Whopper" priced at $12.99.

Enter, surprisingly, Burger King. Naturally, the customers are angry - Burger King claims those in the ad were real guests, though we're skeptical as to what that really means. Well thank goodness for Burger King because they know the way to an American's brain is through his stomach and this simple breakdown helped those customers understand instantly. Pai pointed that out in this video before the Net Neutrality rules were repealed. "It's stupid but true".

John Oliver called attention to net neutrality on "Last Week Tonight". Only 20 percent of USA households have a choice when it comes to high-speed broadband provider, as the big cable companies mostly operate regional monopolies.

Then shows the King himself, drinking from a Reese's mug, a clear reference to FCC Chairman Ajit Pai. But despite the outcome of the vote, supporters of net neutrality believe the fight to save it is not yet over.
