Australian Open: Nadal breezes past Dzumhur in Melbourne

Rafael Nadal celebrates after easing his way into the last 16 of the Australian Open

Nadal, a losing finalist to Roger Federer past year in Melbourne, has lost only 21 games in his three victories to reach the round of 16.

The heatwave had relented here by the time Nadal walked on Margaret Court Arena, but the Spaniard was on fire as he battered the 28th seed into submission.

He will now lock horns with third-seed Grigor Dimitrov for a place in the quarter-finals.

But the Australian roared back brilliantly, raising a match point by reeling Tsonga forward with a deftly placed drop shot and volleying his scooped recovery into an open court.

The local crowd were spurred on by the hope that they might see a first Australian male singles victor of the tournament in 42 years when Nick Kyrgios beat 2008 finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5).

While Nadal won the first of his 16 grand slam titles a few days after his 19th birthday, the two men whose clash follows his match have yet to join the major winners' club despite such honours being long predicted for them.

Nadal next faces Diego Schwartzman, the tournament's 24th seed. "I learned that I can play against everyone".

The Andre Agassi Foundation for Education in Las Vegas has raised $US180 million ($A225 million) and the eight-time grand slam champion was thrilled to learn of Kyrgios' new selfless pursuit.

Dimitrov will next play the victor of Friday night's match on Rod Laver between local hope Nick Kyrgios and 2008 finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the round of 16.

Andreas Seppi withstood 52 aces from 38-year-old Ivo Karlovic for a 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (3), 6-7 (5), 9-7 win in 3 hours and 51 minutes in the afternoon.

The Australian Open junior champion past year, who entered the season-opening major ranked No. 521, Kostyuk became the youngest player since Martina Hingis in 1996 to win main draw matches at the season-opening major.

Allertova will next play either fourth-seeded Elina Svitolina or 15-year-old Marta Kostyuk.

"I was very focused and I'm very happy to have another chance on Sunday", Nadal said.

The heat was so overwhelming that Alize Cornet had her blood pressure checked during a stoppage of play, and players were seeking shade throughout their matches. "Well, a lot", she said, per the AP.

Second seed Caroline Wozniacki sailed past Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands 6-4, 6-3. "I love Australia. I love the summertime", she said after the win.

"You just have to always be on in the match".
