Apple and Google Are Rerouting Their Employee Buses as Attacks Resume

The Guardian reported on Wednesday afternoon that at least five commuter buses have been targeted in the suspected pellet gun attacks. The first attack happened last Friday and four more occurred on Tuesday.

The union representing shuttle drivers who drove two of the Apple buses struck Tuesday, Teamsters Local 853, described the incidents as a "pellet gun attack" in a statement. However, California Highway Patrol officer Art Montiel confirmed that an investigation with Apple is still ongoing.

The report quoted Montiel as saying that if someone has targeted the buses, they will be on screen soon; they can not hide themselves for so long. Google also said it rerouted its shuttles from the highway as a result.

In a Facebook post, the Redwood City CHP noted that the tech shuttles, which look like normal Greyhound buses, are unmarked and that there's "no indication that these are targeted incidents to a specific company".

The shuttle buses were not marked with the logo of the tech company using them.

Vandals damaged and charter buses carrying employees to and from work in California's Silicon Valley in recent days, police said on Thursday.

Why are the buses being attacked?

The service, which is available only to the employees, has always been seen as a symbol of division between the tech workers and everyone else, notes Business Insider.

Interestingly, the buses involved in this latest incident don't include branding indicating they come from a major tech corporation.

Doug Bloch, a representative for the Teamsters unit, said that only the outer layer of the buses' double-paned windows cracked, suggesting that the projectiles lacked the force of bullets. Fortune reports the attacks took place on highway 280, so Apple diverted its buses, though doing so adds up to 45 minutes of commute time.

Apple and Google have yet to respond to NBC Bay Area's request for comment. The biggest grouse against the techies is that their inflow has led to increased house rent in the area which agrees with the high salary they get. "We're working closely with law enforcement to investigate these incidents", the email said, according to Mashable.
