Ryanair eyes new bases in France, Scandinavia after union move

Ryanair Pilots Set Recognition Deadline as Strike Threat Lingers

The unions, which suspended a plan strike this week, said they "reiterated its position that its mandate for strike action can be implemented, after the required notice is given, in the absence of a timely agreement".

In engaging with the unions, Ryanair is breaking a 25-year-old policy of pilots dealing directly with Ryanair, although Ryanair was insistent that a Committees of Ryanair pilots should be established to deal with Ryanair issues, as Ryanair will not engage with pilots who fly for competitor airlines in Ireland or elsewhere.

Shares in the airline were up 1.6 per cent at €15.20 this morning, recovering some of the ground lost over previous sessions as investors fretted about the cost of the airline's move to recognise unions.

The unions said they gave Ryanair a series of proposals to consider and requested a response by midday (1200 GMT) on Thursday, a schedule which the no-frills airline has not yet committed to.

Ireland's IMPACT union and its IALPA pilot branch announced the suspension of Wednesday's 24-hour strike and said it would meet the airline after Ryanair "agreed to recognise the union".

"While Ryanair management said they recognized IMPACT/IALPA for collective bargaining purposes at this evening's meeting, they said they were unable to give the union a piece of paper to confirm this", the union said. "It will lead on in the New Year to meetings with other EU pilot unions and cabin crew unions in due course as well".

Pilots had complained of a toxic atmosphere at Ryanair, where many had always been indirectly employed through third parties, an arrangement that had seen some pursued by tax authorities.

Peter Bellew, chief operations officer of Ryanair, told the pilots he knew their problems had not been addressed.

Mr Wilson said Ryanair was interested in the outcome and not the rituals but that they would get there. "Everywhere I turned, I could see that people were asking for small things to be done and they just weren't getting done", he was quoted as saying.
