North Korea's Missile Launch Gave Airline Pilots a Jolt

Cathay Pacific Airlines, whose main hub is based out of the Hong Kong International Airport, confirmed that one of its crews witnessed on November 29 "what is suspected to be the re-entry" of the missile into the Earth's atmosphere, the broadcaster reported.

Though the airline does not have images of video of the incident, there cameras mounted beneath the fuselage, which passengers can view live from their seats.

The airlines confirmed that crew of the CX893 flight has reported the suspected sighting of the missile - which Pyongyang said can hit targets "everywhere in the world" - when they were mid-flight.

"Singapore Airlines is aware of the reports on the sighting of the North Korean missiles and is closely monitoring the situation", a spokesperson told Channel NewsAsia.

Korean Air said it was unclear how far the apparent missile re-entry was from its own planes, whose flights originated in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

"It is something to be concerned about", said Peter Harbison, executive chairman of CAPA - Center for Aviation, a consultancy in Sydney, Australia.

While few believe the regime's program is complete, the threat posed by the new missile is significant, warned United States Defense Secretary Gen. Jim Mattis.

In a recent statement by the airline, it said that it has been in contact with relevant authorities, industry bodies and other airlines about what Cathay Pacific Flight 893 has seen.

But North Korea's tendency to launch without warning is "worrying", he added.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in October condemned North Korea for the repeated launching of ballistic missiles, saying they seriously threatened the safety of international civil aviation.

North Korea launched the missile in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Nov. 28 as a flight by the Hong Kong-based airline crossed the Pacific from San Francisco to Hong Kong.

Taking a jab at the United States with its glorious moment, a spokesman for the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Country even mocked "insane President Trump is running wild. stunned by North Korea completing the state nuclear force". The missile flew about 1,000 km before landing in Japan's maritime Economic Exclusion Zone, reports claim.

The Japanese Parliament declared on Monday that North Korean missile tests are an "unprecedented, significant, and imminent threat" and adopted a resolution condemning last week's launch.
