Facebook reveals data on copyright and trademark complaints

Facebook law enforcement takedowns quadrupled in six months because of a school shooting video

Since 2013, when the company first started providing data on government requests, the United States number has been steadily rising-it has roughly tripled in a period of four years. Next was India with 12 percent, then the United Kingdom (9 percent), Germany (7 percent), and France (6 percent).

Facebook's Transparency report 2017: Over 9,690 requests were regarding legal process with the government and they asked for access to 13,490 user accounts.

The ninth Facebook transparency report showed that governments' requests for information about users increased 21 percent worldwide compared to the second half of 2016, from 64,279 to 78,890.

Content removal requests for violating local law rose a massive 304 percent globally, from 6,944 to 28,036, however this was due largely to a video of school shooting in Mexico in January.

Sonderby added Facebook "carefully scrutinize" each request received for account data to ensure it's legally sufficient. At a global level, requests increased by 21 percent from the second half of 2016.

Meanwhile, there were 52 disruptions of Facebook services in nine countries in the first half of 2017, compared to 43 in 20 countries in the second half of 2016. For example, in the first half of 2017, we received 224,464 copyright reports about content on Facebook, 41,854 trademark reports, and 14,279 counterfeit reports.

There has also been a slight increase in the percentage of requests that have prompted data to be disclosed. "If a request appears to be deficient or overly broad, we push back, and will fight in court, if necessary", Facebook's Deputy General Counsel Chris Sonderby said in a blog post.

The report also points out the internet disruption of Pakistan which occurred only once in the first half of 2017, which affected Facebook products and services in Pakistan. Rightsholders can send takedown requests for unauthorized uses to a team of Facebook content analysts. Facebook suggested these shutdowns can create barriers for businesses and prevent people from sharing and communicating with their family and friends.

The informal organization initially presented the reports, which give crude figures on information solicitations and information in truth, in 2013 to help build permeability on government conduct.

The social media company also took down 217,265 posts from Facebook driven by counterfeit claims, and 108,094 from Instagram. Some 70,000 solicitations for copyright came to Instagram, with 685,000 bits of substance evacuated.
