Atlanta Airport Recovering After Power Failure

Two flights canceled at Colorado Springs Airport due to Atlanta power outage

Officials had received a fire signal from tunnel sensors - about simultaneously with the power going out - but smoke had billowed into more than one concourse, which made it hard to pinpoint the source and confirm that there was a fire. Disabled people had to be carried down stairs and escalators in the chaos. Airport spokesman Reese McCranie said all airport operations were affected, and outgoing flights were halted. The planes and crews typically fly in from Atlanta at night, stay overnight here and fly out in the morning.

Anthony Foxx, who served as USA transportation secretary under former President Barack Obama, blasted airport officials, saying the problem was "compounded by confusion and poor communication".

"Sat on the plane for six hours and then cleared customs and immigration", Vizdos said.

"We can not operate without power to our airports". All essential services were restored and an investigation was ongoing, the tweet said.

The airline encouraged travelers not to pick up their bags Monday because of congestion at the airport.

That's on top of more than a thousand flights canceled Sunday, and those effects are being felt in Savannah.

"It was not a good feeling that came over me". "This is nothing compared to what's happening over there".

Industry experts expect it to be a few days before flights get fully back on schedule.

One of those people was a retired Maine State Trooper, who now lives just outside of Bangor.

The airport saw more than 1,000 flights canceled.

But on Monday, it showed an increasing number of scheduled departures as well as arrivals. Will we be able to get all of the planes to a gate? "The people were helpless".

Some travelers tell us they would've looked for flights leaving other cities if their flights out of Evansville were canceled. "It was just a nightmare".

Home is Alaska for the Hann family, so they have a 14-hour travel day to get there.

An Atlanta city employee in a Santa hat gave out candy, and Delta employees handed out free doughnuts to people making their way to the parking lots. Delta passenger Emilia Duca, 32, was on her way to Wisconsin from Bogota, Colombia, when she got stuck in Atlanta.

While the airport had conducted drills for partial outages, making plans to shuffle operations between terminals, it made zero preparations for the entire facility to go dark. Five flights in or out of Bush Intercontinental Airport were canceled. Passengers should also coordinate with their chosen airline in the event of a delay or cancellation. The airport serves an average of 275,000 passengers daily, according to its website. Almost 20 departures scheduled for Sunday afternoon and evening were canceled.
