United States stands alone as Syria plans to join Paris climate accord

The attendees of the United Nations (UN) climate talks yesterday (Nov 7) witnessed a historical moment when Syria announced that it will become a signatory of the Paris Climate Agreement - subsequently isolating the United States, who abandoned the framework that was created to tackle climate change in June of this year.

"We need everybody on board", Ronald Jumeau, of the Seychelles, told Reuters. But comments on social media were directed more at the United States and Donald Trump. "We take no pleasure in the United States being out".

While the United States ratified the 2015 Paris Agreement previous year, President Donald Trump announced in June that he wants to pull out unless the US can get a better deal. But it said Damascus had not yet filed any of the official documents to sign up. There was no applause, however, at a conference where Assad's government has few allies. Nor that Canada won't meet its 2020 or 2030 United Nations greenhouse gas reduction targets unless it buys billions of dollars worth of useless carbon offsets on fraud-ridden global carbon markets.

That move put the country with Syria and Nicaragua as nations that were not part of the deal, though Nicaragua, which originally said that the agreement did not go far enough, announced last month that it has already submitted the paperwork to join.

If emissions are reduced as spelled out in the agreement, scientists and policymakers say it will prevent a major increase in global temperatures that would raise sea levels, spark major droughts, and lead to more unsafe storms.

French President Emmanuel Macron plans a summit to push his "Make our Planet Great Again" agenda on December 12, the anniversary of the 2015 Paris climate accord.

"Now he'll be isolated from all nations", he said.

On June 2, former Secretary of State John Kerry of the Obama administration called the US withdraw from the Paris agreement "one of the most cynical and frankly ignorant and unsafe, self-destructive steps that I've seen in my entire lifetime in public life".

The UN's weather agency said on Monday that this year is on track to be the second or third warmest since records began in the 19th century, behind a record-breaking 2016.

The Bonn meeting is seeking to write a detailed "rule book" for the Paris agreement, including details of how to report and check all nations' greenhouse gas emissions.
