U.S. and Turkey resume processing some visas after spat

US Embassy In Turkey Partially Lifts Visa Sanctions

The U.S. embassy said it continues to "have serious concerns about the existing cases against arrested local employees" as well as the cases of other arrested U.S. citizens.

In response to the U.S. embassy's statement, which said "the security posture in Turkey has improved efficiently to resume services", the Turkish embassy said that the remarks do not "reflect the truth".

In turn, the Daily Sabah reports that the Americans resumed the issuance of visas to the visit of Prime Minister of Turkey, Binali Yildirim, in the United States.

Turkey is "deeply concerned" about legal cases concerning Turkish citizens in the United States, its embassy in Washington said on Monday, adding the decision to partially resume issuing visas at USA and Turkish missions was a positive development.

"Turkish citizens wishing to visit the United States, can re-apply for an interview for a visa". The email went on to give instructions on expedited appointments.

Based on the assurances from the Turkish government, the State Department "believes the security posture has improved sufficiently to allow for the resumption of limited visa services" in Turkey, Nauert said in the statement.

The Turkish government is expected to reciprocate, potentially resolving a diplomatic standoff that began a month ago, following the arrest of a local employee of a US Consulate.

US President Donald Trump shakes hands with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during a meeting at the Palace Hotel during the United Nations General Assembly, September 21, 2017, in NY.

Turkey has pressed Washington for the extradition of the Pennsylvania-based Gulen, who denies any link to the coup bid. Gulen has denied the accusation.

In the aftermath of the coup attempt, which was led by military officers, 40,000 people were arrested and 120,000 sacked or suspended.

In March, a Turkish employee at the U.S. consulate in the southern city of Adana was arrested on charges of supporting the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which both Ankara and Washington consider a terror group.

Turkey has also been enraged by Washington's support for the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia in the fight against Islamic State.
