Lebanon's 'detained' premier to travel to France

Lebanese President Michel Aoun

It was the first time Michel Aoun described Prime Minister Saad Hariri as a detainee of the kingdom, after Hariri announced his resignation under mysterious circumstances from Saudi Arabia 12 days ago. The comments were his first in public since he quit from Riyadh on November 4. Hariri's father, Rafik Hariri, was assassinated in a auto bomb explosion in 2005, which officials believe was planted by Hezbollah agents, and Hariri said he feared the same fate.

Before departing to Saudi Arabia Rai said the return of Hariri from Saudi Arabia was essential for Lebanon's stability. He is due to hold talks with Hariri on Thursday.

France's foreign minister is expected in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday to meet with Hariri and Saudi officials.

Saudi Arabia has accused Hezbollah of aiding Iran-allied rebels in Yemen, who fired a ballistic missile that was intercepted outside the Saudi capital earlier this month. "You will see", Hariri wrote, without elaborating.

The statement sparked concern that tiny Lebanon would be caught in the crosshairs of rising tensions between Riyadh and Tehran.

Aoun, meanwhile, has yet to accept Hariri's resignation amid speculation that the latter was being held against his will by the Saudi authorities.

The president said that the country is safe economically, financially and regarding security.

"What happened wasn't a resignation - it was an attack on Lebanon's independence and dignity", he said yesterday, adding that Hariri's absence represented "a violation of the worldwide declaration of human rights".

Speaker Nabih Berri said that Hariri should consider rescinding his resignation upon his eventual return to Lebanon, according to a statement issued by Berri's press office.

He repeated the sentiment on Tuesday, publishing his first tweet in more than a week to insist he was "perfectly fine". In his statement, Hariri said he was stepping down because he feared the growing influence of Iran on Lebanon's government.

"What's at stake is Mr Hariri being able to return home freely to clarify his situation in line with the Lebanese constitution", French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe told parliament in Paris.
