Iran Quake Survivors Complain of Slow Aid Effort

Iran earthquake

At least 332 people were killed in Iran and Iraq on Sunday (November 13) when a powerful magnitude 7.3 quake hit the region, state media in the two countries said, as rescuers stepped up efforts overnight to find dozens trapped under rubble.

Hundreds of ambulances and dozens of army helicopters reportedly joined the rescue effort after Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ordered the government and armed forces to mobilise "all their means". "Where is the aid?" But by Tuesday morning Iranian officials said there was no longer any likelihood of finding survivors and called off the search.

Hospitals in nearby provinces took in numerous injured, state television said, airing footage of survivors waiting to be treated.

Iran's Red Crescent said emergency shelter had been provided for thousands of homeless people, but a lack of water and electricity as well as blocked roads in some areas hindered aid supply efforts.

At least 7 460 people were injured during the quake, which hit seven big cities and 1 950 villages in the province.

Iranian officials say the situation is under control in affected areas, but newspapers and media have been circulating recordings of citizens complaining of being left out in the cold without aid, food and medicine. My family lives in a village near Sarpol-e Zahab. Groups clustered around bonfires trying to warm themselves. Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli told an open session of parliament Wednesday that a total of 36,000 tents had been sent to the region, including those already distributed. Women's cries filled the night air, but it was too early to sleep. "We need blankets and tents". Fifty people had died here in a massive natural disaster two nights earlier and had been buried by their relatives in makeshift graves.

The mayor of the city of Ezgeleh said 80% of its buildings had collapsed. Behnam Saeedi, a spokesman for the country's crisis management headquarters, told two semi-official news agencies that casualty figures stood at 407 killed and 6,700 injured. "Last night I cried when I saw children with no food or shelter".

Iran President Hassan Rouhani has vowed to "find the culprits" responsible for buildings collapsing in a 7.3-magnitude natural disaster on Sunday.

"The people should build their own houses".

Rouhani, promising victims emergency financial assistance, said in Kermanshah: "I want to assure those who are suffering that the government has begun to act with all means at its disposal and is scrambling to resolve this problem as quickly as possible". "I promise you, those responsible will be punished".

Rescuers dug with their bare hands Monday through the debris of buildings felled by an quake that killed more than 430 people in the border region of Iran and Iraq, with almost all the casualties occurring in an area rebuilt after their ruinous 1980s war.
