EU's Tusk to fly to Dublin on Friday as Brexit deadline nears

The role of both Irish nationalist and pro-British unionist parties from Northern Ireland in the Brexit talks has been hampered by their failure to restore the province's devolved power-sharing government since its collapse nearly a year ago. There is undoubtedly an ever-increasing usage of nasty, jingoistic language by certain sections of the Brexit brigade, built on the shaky mythology of past imperial glory and imagined superiority.

Negotiations to reach agreement on the border between Ireland and the United Kingdom are intensifying ahead of Monday's deadline for the British government to put forward proposals that will allow Brexit talks to move to the next stage.

Making progress on the question of the Irish border is crucial for the advancement of Brexit talks.

In the video (below), the Channel 4 crew took to the streets to ask members of the public what they thought the impact of Brexit would be on Ireland.

British Government: No physical infrastructure on the border but Northern Ireland leaves the EU Customs Union with the rest of the UK. The British decision to leave the EU customs union and single market not only threatens to affect movement on the island, but also represents a symbolic and psychological step backwards in the peace process.

While the European Union proposes Northern Ireland should keep its regulation the same as that of Ireland after the split so there's no need for a border, that would create a barrier between Northern Ireland and mainland Britain, which is a red line for the DUP.

"If the deal is voted down we come out on World Trade Organisation rules".

Irish Government: No physical infrastructure on the border and the same rules on trade on both sides.

The meetings come as both sides work to make progress on the three core issues of the Irish border, the so-called "divorce bill" and European Union citizens' rights.

The progress is being made ahead of a crunch meeting between Theresa May and EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker over lunch on Monday.

"There are a number of ways in which we can ensure that for the future and look forward to having more detailed discussions on that as we move into phase two of the negotiations".

An EU negotiator told the Times: 'After sufficient progress on withdrawal we will open the next two phases of negotiations, first of all on a transition period and then on the future partnership.

However, there are indications that the Irish issue will not be resolved in time for that meeting.

'We need political solutions now and we are not getting them from the UK Government'.
