Driver killed after boy jumps from overpass onto auto in Virginia

The New York Daily News reports an unidentified child jumped off an interstate overpass and landed on a auto, killing 22-year-old Marisa Harris of Maryland.

Investigators said they responded to the scene at about 4:15 p.m. after the boy jumped from the Cedar Lane overpass in Vienna and onto Harris' 2005 Ford Escape as she was driving eastbound.

The victim's boyfriend, who was sat in the front passenger seat and was uninjured, was able to steer the vehicle and stop it. Police reported that the teenager boy was rushed to the Inova Fairfax Hospital and now treated for his life-threatening wounds. The incident is being investigated as an attempted suicide, according to police.

The incident took place Saturday afternoon in Fairfax County. A 23-year-old male passenger who was traveling with Harris managed to grab the steering wheel and direct the vehicle off of the interstate. Marisa was a caring, giving person who meant to devote her life to helping children in crisis. She was a clinical counseling student who would have helped the child if she had the chance, her devastated mother told News4.

Harris completed her graduation in 2013 from Sherwood High School in Olney, Maryland, where she had been part of a graduating class of 347 students.

Harris, who grew up in Marlyland, lived in Arlington and was pursuing a master's degree in clinical counseling at Marymount University.

Harris' father Patrick Harris described his daughter as an outgoing person, who had a love for the outdoors. "She was awesome. I miss her so much".
