Zuckerberg apologises for Facebook being used to 'divide' people

Zuckerberg asks forgiveness but Facebook needs change

In total, the corporation received $100,000 (85,000 euro) for the ads, which it says were purchased by a Russian internet agency.

Joel Kaplan, Facebook's vice president of global policy, wrote in a blog post Monday that the social network is "taking aggressive steps to strengthen" how it reviews ads.

Burr said he considers the ads committee-sensitive documents.

Rep. Mike Conaway, the Texas Republican leading the House intelligence panel's Russian Federation probe, said he was inclined to release them publicly, though he wanted to see them first. Those companies have come under increasing pressure from Capitol Hill to investigate Russian meddling and are facing the possibility of new regulations that could affect their massive advertising businesses. Amy Klobuchar have introduced a bill to require more transparency from social media companies that run political ads, not unlike the rules TV stations follow.

Are you bothered by fake news, systematic misinformation campaigns and Facebook "dark posts" - micro-targeted ads not visible to the public - aimed at African-Americans to discourage them from voting?

Facebook had sent congressional investigators more than 3,000 ads that were Russian-backed, and representatives from the company have been invited to testify before Congress next month.

The juxtaposition between the heightened accountability measures and the inability to confirm their efficacy highlights the vast challenge Facebook and other social media networks face as they seek to prevent foreign nationals from using their platforms to meddle in American politics.

Moscow has repeatedly denied interfering in the United States election.

Congress has been pressuring Facebook to reveal details about its advertising system after Mark Zuckerberg admitted to selling $100,000 in ads to a Russian company during the 2016 US presidential election.

One of the Russian-bought advertisements that Facebook shared with congressional investigators on Monday featured photographs of an armed black woman "dry firing" a rifle - pulling the trigger of the weapon without a bullet in the chamber, according to people familiar with the investigation.

"That's not what we stand for", he said.

Mark Zuckerberg continued on a trend of public statements regarding Facebook's role in "dividing people", apologizing for the trouble his work may have caused.

Last week, Trump complained that not only were major USA media outlets against him during the election, but also Facebook. 'I don't want anyone to use our tools to undermine democracy, ' Zuckerberg said in a video message. For repeatedly refusing to acknowledge the social network's role in putting Donald Trump in the White House and even allowing Russian Federation to purchase ads to spread fake news, the billionaire is asking for forgiveness.
