What would trigger a Tory Party leadership contest?

A prankster who has previously targeted US President Donald Trump and former Federation Internationale de Football Association president Sepp Blatter interrupted British Prime Minister Theresa May's keynote speech at her annual conference on Wednesday.

Divisions over the future of May was made public on Friday with a former chairman of her party saying 30 Conservative members of parliament backed a plot to topple her. In his interview, Vaizey, who supported staying in the European Union at last year's referendum, said the Conservative Party is "split down the middle" on Brexit "and that's very bad for the country".

Shapps told the "Today" programme on BBC Radio 4 that the Conservative's often chaotic conference meant that "some colleagues feel it would be better to have that leadership election sooner or rather later".

She added that MPs would get an update on her Florence speech next week.

According to Conservative Party rules, a leadership contest can be triggered in two ways, with the most obvious being if Mrs May resigns.

Her survival has so far been dependent on the absence of an obvious successor who could unite the split party around Brexit and fear of an election that many Conservatives think would let opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn into power.

May's speech started with an apology over the snap general election she called in June.

He said the "overwhelming majority" of Tory MPs - including the "entirety" of the Cabinet - wanted her to carry on.

But they added there were "probably many more" than the 30 disaffected MPs allegedly held on a list by Mr Shapps, warning: "I think the party is in a awful hole". He claimed Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who has clashed with May over Brexit, told him to do it.

The tough day at the dais ended as letters from a Conservative Party slogan on a wall behind May, reading "Building a country that works for everyone", began falling off.

Shapps has been vocal in his concerns about the prime minister's position recently and this morning confirmed he was behind attempts to persuade her to step down. The content of the Prime Minister's speech in Manchester this week demonstrated clearly that she has a plan to make our country better for everyone. She and her ministers have sought to depict the Labour leadership as unsafe Marxists. One senior lawmaker who believes May is deeply wounded said she would survive this crisis but the next one would end her leadership.

The Prime Minister's famous red ministerial box is also visible in the picture, which had been retweeted more than 500 times within 10 minutes of being posted.
