Nobel Physics Prize Awarded To Scientists Who Spotted Gravitational Waves

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences will start today to announce the winners of the Nobel prize

The Nobel Prize in Physics going to the LIGO architects for their contribution to detecting gravitational waves serves as a major encouragement for Indian researchers to participate in mega science projects and be leaders in them, said an official of the LIGO India project.

LSU Adjunct Professor and MIT Professor Emeritus Rainer Weiss and California Institute of Technology professor emeriti Kip Thorne and Barry Barish have been awarded this year's Nobel Prize in Physics.

Gravitational waves spread at the speed of light, filling the universe.

The awarding of the prize came after an worldwide team of scientists announced a year ago the detection of ripples in space-time from two colliding black holes.

Einstein was convinced that the waves were too subtle to be measured, but LIGO can pick up the signals when they're given off by the most massive clashes in the universe. He said the award was the result of the collaboration of 1,000 people involved in the LIGO project, which observed gravitational waves and confirmed a century-old theory by Albert Einstein.

The Nobel Physics Prize 2017 has been awarded to three scientists for their discoveries in gravitational waves.

The scientists were noted for their "invaluable" contributions to the success of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory.

"With this discovery we can study processes which were completely impossible, out of reach to us in the past", said Ariel Goobar of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

"We live in an epoch where rational reasoning associated with evidence isn't universally accepted and is in fact in jeopardy".

In his 1915 theory, Einstein outlined how ripples are created in the very fabric of spacetime itself when objects with large masses collide.

Speaking at the Nobel Prize conference, Uppsala University particle physicist Olga Botner commented that the first detection of gravitation waves "caused a sensation worldwide".

Glasgow University physicists played a key role in the detection of gravitational waves, a discovery that has changed the way we understand the universe. "Like the rest of the scientific world and beyond, we congratulate these researchers and the members of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration for such a monumental scientific milestone".

"Some of the first steps on the road to this new field of gravitational wave astronomy were taken here in Glasgow by Professor Ron Drever and Professor Jim Hough and we're proud of having built on that work to evolve into the Institute as we are today".

In 2011, LSU Alumni Professor Bradley Schaefer and colleagues from the Supernova Cosmology Project received a share of the prize for their observation of distant supernovas.

He said that as the detectors develop and become more sensitive, scientists will be able to look deeper into the universe and gain more insights into the origins of the universe.

Last year's prize went to three British physicists for their work on exotic states of matter that may pave the way for quantum computers and other revolutionary technologies.
