Eighth child killed by recalled Ikea dressers

A two-year-old boy who died when an Ikea chest of drawers fell on him is the fourth child to be killed by the same product. A third child died in April 2016, leading to IKEA issuing new safety warnings and an expanded recall.

A 2-year-old California boy was killed last May after being crushed by an IKEA dresser that was subject to a recall in 2016, IKEA said Wednesday.

The family's lawyer, Alan M. Feldman, said the accident occurred in May and the boy was unsupervised at the time.

Jozef's parents had put him down for a nap at the time.

The company is issuing refunds or free wall anchoring kits to customers who own these dressers or chests.

But Feldman insists the recall was ineffective.

The 29 million chests were recalled in 2016 because of a "serious tip-over hazard" according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Ikea, pictured March 27, 2013 in southern France, has comes under fire following a tipping dresser that has killed multiple children.

The Swedish furniture retailer recalled 1.66 million chest of drawers in China, following a 36 million recall in North America and Canada, last year.

Ikea did not address the validity of these numbers, but they did note in their statement that the recall of Malm dressers goes back many years, and argued that it would be impossible to truly know how numerous items are still now being used.

Mann says the design was inherently unsafe and charged that the company still hasn't done enough to warn consumers who may have one at home. All over the world, families trust Ikea furniture to serve its goal in their homes without causing too much strife.

In a statement, Ikea offered "sincere condolences during this most hard time" to Jozef's family. Ikea has since redesigned some of its dressers and says all dressers it sells now adhere to the voluntary industry standard for stability. The settlement money is said to have been divided among the three families.

"Options available to consumers include having the chest removed free of charge from the consumers' home, having the chest anchored to the wall in the home free of charge, receiving a free wall anchor kit for self-installation or returning the product for a refund", a spokesperson for IKEA said in a statement sent to ABC.

Mr Mann, who represented the families of three other children who died in similar circumstances, said the family plans to sue the store. The evidence developed in the cases showed that IKEA had been aware of other deaths and injuries arising from furniture tip-overs that failed to meet minimum safety standards, but nevertheless refused to re-design its furniture products to be more stable and tip-resistant.
