Turkey parliament extends mandate for troop deployment in Syria and Iraq

Turkey's national defense minister on Saturday called on northern Iraq's Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) to cancel its independence referendum planned for early next week.

An independent Kurdistan would be a blow to Iraq's central government and is opposed by neighboring states with Kurdish populations who are anxious their own populations could be emboldened to hold similar referenda. It also emphasized the importance of Iraq and Syria's territorial integrity and said "separatism based on ethnicity" poses a threat to both Turkey and regional stability. "So we could not agree on [a solution to] the crisis", Ali Allak, a member from Shia National Alliance, said.

The non-binding referendum will see Iraqis in KRG-controlled areas - and in a handful of territories disputed between Erbil and Baghdad - vote whether to declare full independence from Iraq.

"An action that will change the status in Syria and Iraq is an unacceptable result for Turkey, and we will do what is necessary", Yildirim said.

Meanwhile, KRG President Masoud Barzani postponed a scheduled news conference on the controversial referendum from Saturday to Sunday.

The combination of a weakened USA imperialism, the impact of the unending world capitalist economic crisis, and the coming apart of Iraq and Syria in ongoing wars and factional battles between Shiite and Sunni, has given the Kurds a historic opportunity to advance their struggle. Turkey considers the Kurdish forces a terrorist organization, linked to its home-grown Kurdish insurgency. He said the move is opposed by Turkey, Iran and the Syrian government, but said "the will of the people will prevail in the end".

He directed the Peshmerga to be prepared to "pay whatever cost" necessary to protect Kurdistan, because they will not allow the region to fall to the enemy. Iran and Syria also worry that the vote will encourage secessionist ideas among their own Kurdish minorities.

Addressing parliament on a motion to extend the government mandate to deploy troops in Iraq and Syria, Nurettin Canikli signaled that he supports a peaceful resolution of the disputes between the KRG and the central Iraqi government in Baghdad.

The vote comes ahead of a separate independence referendum which is being held in northern Iraq on Monday.

Washington's arrogant and condescending demand that the Kurds put off their vote reflects the longstanding hostility of the USA capitalist rulers to the struggle of the over 30 million Kurds for their own state.
