Maine's Collins puts another nail in coffin of Obamacare repeal

Alex Brandon | AP | BDN

The Texas Republican said he and Lee discussed the measure with its sponsors - GOP Sens. GOP Sen. Susan Collins of ME said Sunday it's "very difficult" to think she'd vote "yes". Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said he and a colleague were not ready to back the measure.

Trump appears to be on an offensive aimed at getting Paul on board with the bill, whom he has generally had a cordial rapport with, while Senate leadership is focusing on winning over Trump critics Collins and Murkowski. Graham-Cassidy Bill is GREAT! Republicans have pledged for seven years to overturn the law, and President Donald Trump made doing so a central theme of his 2016 campaign.

Earlier this week, Collins told ABC News she was "leaning no" on the health care bill.

"We said if you take these edits we're a yes". The Senate's vehicle to pass a health care bill with just 51 votes expires at the end of this month, and it only takes one more Republican "no" vote to stop the legislation from passing altogether.

"I can not in good conscience vote for the Graham-Cassidy proposal".

The bill has been roundly rejected by influential national groups representing physicians, hospitals and insurers.

"It's a little tougher without McCain's vote, I'll be honest". No Democrats are expected to vote in favor of repeal. "We're going to go back", he said and added: "You can't quit when you have one or two votes short". Murkowski hasn't committed on the bill.

There are already two Republican senators on record opposing the bill from GOP Sens. "What I am doing, as is my general practice, is I would like to see the Congressional Budget Office analysis, which is expected to come out tomorrow morning". Far from it. The bill's authors are my dear friends, and I think the world of them. "So it may be hard for the CBO to do the kind of in-depth analysis that it usually does, but that's what I would like to see before making a formal decision". Nor could I support it without knowing how much it will cost, how it will (affect) insurance premiums, and how many people will be helped or hurt by it. Then, the vice president would cast the final 51st vote. "And finally, I'm very concerned about the erosion of protections for people with pre-existing conditions, like asthma, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, and what it would mean to them".

"Rand Paul objects to the taxes", he said. "We ought to proceed down that route and do a series of bills that fixes the current law, which does have a lot of flaws". "We put a cap on Obamacare growth". "I can't in good conscience vote to keep all the spending". It would send block grants of federal money to the country's 50 states and allow them to shape independent health care plans for the poorest people in their states, rather than having Washington officials allocate the money, as is now the case.

"I've always been a "yes" for repeal", Paul said on NBC's "Meet the Press".

The prospects for bringing the bill to the floor next week, however, are dimming.

The Republican leader is also keeping a close eye this week on the Senate race in Alabama, where Republican Sen. Some Republicans also believe it will embolden other conservative insurgents to challenge Republican senators in 2018.

Over time, the legislation would significantly reduce federal health care dollars now flowing to the states.

Here's what Trump's tweeted about Paul: "I think he may find a way to get there for the good of the Party!"
