USDA office bans phrase 'climate change' from use - this is why

EPA chief Scott Pruitt speaks to the media on June

Staff in the USA government have been told to avoid using the term climate change, with "weather extremes" preferred, as part of Donald Trump's war on science. The first email obtained by the Guardian, sent by NRCS Deputy Chief for Programs Jimmy Bramblett on January 24, advised of the new administration's "shift in perspective" with regard to climate change.

Bianca Moebius-Clune, director of soil health, wrote in messages obtained by The Guardian: 'We won't change the modeling, just how we talk about it'.

According to leaked documents, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has been given a list of banned and preferred terminology, with phrases such "climate change adaption" banned in favour of "resilience to weather extremes". Instead, they have been told to call it "weather extremes".

"Climate change adaptation" should now be referred to as "resilience to weather extremes", while efforts to "reduce greenhouse gases" should be termed efforts to "build soil organic matter, [or] increase nutrient use efficiency".

Moebius-Clune shared that the new language was given to her staff and suggests it be passed on. She also wrote that a person in the public affairs office advised her to "tamp down on discretionary messaging right now".

Despite the emails, the agency says the incoming Trump administration did not request the language change. Other agencies have gone further in their censorship.

Basically, any reference to climate change or Carbon dioxide is a no-no.

In May, CBD launched a lawsuit against the administration "to uncover public records showing that federal employees have been censored from using words or phrases related to climate change in formal agency communications". But it appears that actual scientists are feeling the chilling effect of the USA administration's public position on climate change being a "hoax" that "is done for the benefit of China".

"The agency continuously evaluates its messaging to America's farmers, ranchers, and foresters as they work to implement voluntary conservation on their operations to improve the health of our soil, air, water, and habitat", Sadeghzadeh said. "Please visit with your staff and make them aware of this shift in perspective within the executive branch".

However, Sam Clovis, Trump's nomination to be the USDA's chief scientist, has labeled climate research "junk science".

On the NRCS website, climate change still remains a topic, unlike the EPA's site, which went through extensive changes regarding the issue when Trump took office.

In emails obtained by The Guardian, USDA officials reportedly told employees that it's time to change the conversation abotu climate change.
